Role
Who you are
- 2+ years of experience managing teams delivering production-level software
- Strong experience in cross-functional project management
- Solid understanding of operating system internals
- Expertise in Linux, including build systems (e.g., Yocto), bootloaders, init systems, containerization, filesystems, networking, and device drivers
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals and the client-server model
- Experience in designing, developing, and deploying large-scale platform-level services and software solutions (both backend and frontend)
- Proficiency in C or C++ and scripting languages like Python

- Expertise in GPU hardware and software architecture
- Experience with robotics or autonomous driving technologies
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a closely related field
What the job involves
- Zoox’s Robot Software Infrastructure team is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled manager to lead two critical functions: the OS Platforms and the Vehicle Configuration
- This team develops platform-level software, including operating systems that enable the execution of complex, hardware-accelerated workloads critical for autonomous driving on automotive-grade hardware
- We work closely with cross-functional teams, collaborating with developers, release management, and operations teams to support vehicle development and deployment at scale
- Developing and maintaining Zoox custom operating system
- Kernel selection, configuration, and device driver updates including GPU drivers
- Development of system services, operating system build tools, and installation tools
- Managing the software build and authorization systems
- Designing and developing in-field update mechanisms and operating system validation plans
- Implementing of OS security features
- Defining modes and mechanisms to audit and control software and hardware configurations at run-time
- Enabling adaptive runtime behavior for various scenarios
- Managing hardware-in-the-loop continuous integration (HIL and CI) infrastructure
Our take
Zoox, a self-driving vehicle company, was founded to make personal transportation safer and more enjoyable for all. It has aimed to achieve this goal by creating a new mode of driverless transportation, thus eradicating the safety and logistical issues that come with human drivers.
It revealed its custom vehicle design in December 2020, showcasing something different from just a car without a driver. Uniquely, all four wheels are independent of one another, and the vehicles have no front or back, making them more agile than a standard car. Zoox claims that it is different from other industry players because it has created an entire driverless ecosystem, including the vehicle itself, allowing it to have more control.
The company is fast becoming a major player in an industry that is predicted to be worth $2 trillion by 2030. Electric motors are highly desirable, particularly in an urban environment, as governments look for ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Zoox is aiming to play a vital role in this evolution towards more sustainable urban mobility. Amazon acquired the company in 2020 and, despite a general downturn in the sector through 2022, is building a Zoox factory and budgeting $1 billion per year for future development and production.
