Who you are
- An analytical detail-oriented individual
- 0-2 years of relevant work experience in Accounting, Financial Analysis & Planning (FP&A) or related field
- Understanding of P&L components, the business context and understanding of performance drivers
- Openness to learning, curious and a growth mindset
- Prior experience in Direct-to-Consumer, Ecommerce or FMCG/manufacturing companies highly desirable
- Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting or management required
- Basic knowledge of Excel / MS Office / BI tools and willingness to learn
- English language and based in Berlin
- Minimum 32 hours working
- Ability to thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment where change is constant
- Exceptional analytical skills and clear communication style
- Eye for detail while being able to take a step back and understand the bigger picture
- Proactive, solution-oriented problem solver
- Ability to collaborate with all levels of the organization, including individuals outside of the finance function
What the job involves
- The Intern - Junior Financial Analyst role offers an opportunity to actively shape the vision and direction of Finance at Marley Spoon
- The candidate will receive ample training and learning opportunities to apply practically accounting principles, assist with inventory tracking, financial planning and analysis, budgeting and forecasting
- This is a hands-on role reporting to FP&A Manager to support the accounting and financial planning workstreams
- Cost Accounting - Own certain monthly, quarterly and annual financial closing activities of the EU segment (IFRS) to ensure correct cost allocations for production, consumption and inventory movements
- Gather, summarize and analyze a significant amount of transactional data and make reasonable conclusions to facilitate key accounting and business decisions
- Monitor and analyze business trends, preparing reports with business performance metrics to enable decision making for senior leadership in EU
- Own the tracking, analysis, and reporting of EU performance across sales, variable costs, and base costs, across multiple brands, through mid-month and month-end, ensuring timely, and accurate completion of reporting
- Conduct comparative analyses versus plan and prior periods to identify trends and explain movements in financial performance
- Help prepare monthly and quarterly business analysis for review with the EU leadership team
- Work with functions outside of finance (e.g., Procurement, Operations, Marketing, Digital, Customer Communications, People Operations) to identify and realize opportunities to lower costs and increase sales
- Contribute to ad hoc finance projects, such as investor presentations and annual audit, as needed
- Work on strategic analyses to support and help grow the EU business (i.e., pricing strategies, margin improvement, business cases)
- Potential of converting this role to full time
Our take
Marley Spoon provides meal kits designed to make week-night cooking easier and more enjoyable. Its source-to-order business model results in less food waste, and its use of efficient delivery routes means that there is less impact on the environment.
With the popularity of meal kits soaring during the pandemic, the company was able to capitalize on momentum and rapidly expand its services. In 2021, Marley Spoon acquired Chefgood, another meal subscription service, allowing it to tap into other market segments and expand its portfolio of existing brands including "Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon", and Dinnerly.
Although meal kits are still popular, especially among those with busy schedules, there has been a decline in their use more recently, in part due to cost-of-living concerns among consumers. Marley Spoon's order frequency has dipped, though the company remains positive that it can remedy this through merchandising efforts and loyalty programs, which for now seems to be its focus.
