Who you are
- 1+ Years experience developing software in a professional environment
- Prior experience building consumer-facing products at scale
- Proficient coding skills in modern languages and frameworks
- Proven ability with algorithms, data structures, data modeling, and schema design
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Desirable
- Experience with languages/frameworks we use at Twitch: Golang, Typescript/React
- Experience building software and services using AWS technologies such as ECS, DynamoDB, Lambda, SQS, and Step Functions
- Familiarity with Twitch, gaming, and/or streaming on Twitch
What the job involves
- Creators are the backbone of Twitch, and their sustainability relies primarily on their ability to earn a living doing what they love
- As a member of the engineering team, you will report to the Senior Engineering Manger of the Creator Sponsorships team
- Your core focus will be building products and features that unlock influencer marketing at scale, enabling creators to earn a living and driving value for brands
- Our team owns Creator Sponsorships and Drops, with products ranging from greenfield and experimental, to scaled and used by millions
- You will become an expert across the breadth of services powering these products - architecting, building, and operating them
- You will be empowered to work across the stack, and will partner with other engineers, product managers, designers, and data specialists to deliver solutions
- Work with product managers, technical leads, and other engineers to design, develop, launch, and operate interactive experiences
- Build distributed applications at scale
- Collaborate with both your team and related teams - fostering shared understanding of how to solve common problems and deliver solutions
- Work backwards from customer problems to drive business impact
Our take
Twitch is the world's leading video platform for gamers, allowing users to livestream gaming sessions and curate a dedicated community for their content. By dedicating the platform to gaming alone, it has amassed a loyal following of fans, and been able to launch its Partner Program where streamers can monetize their livestreams, incorporate corporate partnerships, and even attend TwitchCon, a convention where dedicated gamers can socialize.
Twitch's acquisition by Amazon in 2014 saw its viewers double in a year, bringing the platform to a wider audience. However, with YouTube streaming popularity on the rise, it has big competition to contend with, as some popular streamers prefer going live on the video giant. Interestingly, a recent move by the platform was to enable its partner streamers to make live content on other platforms - previously inhibited by its exclusivity clause - which may combat the possibility of losing streamers permanently to YouTube.
In 2022, Twitch had to contend with backlash for its proposal to cut creator income by reducing their cut of subscription earnings. However, with the plan only affecting a minute number of creators, the controversy appears to have died down. Needless to say, Twitch is for now entirely comfortable in the market - with possible plans to extend past gaming bringing the chance to generate more popularity yet.
