Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of experience building SaaS applications
- 5+ years with JavaScript
- 3+ years with React, preferably with static typing (TypeScript, Flow)
- 1+ years with writing backends or working with backend engineers on a team a plus
- Knowledge of security best practices
- Experience with design systems, Storybook a plus
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred, or GCP, Azure), databases (Postgres preferred, or MySQL, etc.) a plus
- Strong verbal and written English skills
- Desire to work on autonomous teams
- Demonstration of collaboration across teams
- Ability and interest in working at a fully remote company crossing international time zones
- Past demonstrations of proactively working outside of this job description
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Frontend to join our Tooling team within the support organization
- In this role, you'll build customer-facing front end applications and workflows that enable enterprise success on Docker
- You'll work on the systems that power how the world's largest organizations manage, govern, and observe their Docker deployments at scale
- You will collaborate with UX designers and engineers to design a reusable component library, adhering to our design system and accessibility needs
- You will help migrate the codebase and guide architectural improvements and discussions
- You will lead the frontend community of practice in discussions and in collaboration on tech initiatives
- Lead or contribute to the design and architectural improvements that enhance the frontend reliability and consistency in Docker App
- Work across teams, guiding migrations and working at times directly with other teams with technical implementation
- Write, review, maintain, and document JavaScript/TypeScript code
- Establish best practices and ensure they are upheld
- Write unit, integration, and e2e tests
- Deploy code to production, and own the product throughout the lifecycle
- Demonstrate open collaboration across teams and take ownership of supporting the internal engineering needs of the team
- This role may require participation in an on-call rotation to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed

- Ship your first feature to production with guidance from senior engineers
- Develop a solid understanding of Docker's enterprise customer needs and platform architecture
- Build effective working relationships with your immediate team and key partners

- Lead delivery of a significant component of the Enterprise Command Center or governance platform
- Contribute to technical design decisions that impact how enterprise customers experience Docker
- Act as a go-to resource for teammates on areas where you've developed expertise
- Participate in cross-functional projects that touch multiple platform areas
Our take
Docker supplies a hub and desktop solution to simplify the workflow of app development teams. Originally known for popularising the idea of containerising software, it saw itself outpaced by Kubernetes. However, the company has identified a problem with the growing complexity of containerisation, with some apps consisting of dozens or even hundreds of containers - which is what it now addresses.
Docker has had a difficult time in the recent past, with 2019 seeing it sell off its enterprise business, reduce its workforce by hundreds, and change its leadership team. As a well known brand and ecosystem for containerisation, however, it aims to lure developers back to its product as well as to take advantage of the growing global demand for app development.
Returning to focus on developers rather than large companies was certainly a gamble, but one that seems to have paid off. The company has returned to profitability and raised Series C funding in 2022, which is cited to fund hiring new talent, ramping up its business, and continuing to develop and refine its product. It's also embarked on a series of acquisitions to bolster its business, with speculation mounting about its possible sale in the near future.
