Role
Who you are
- 4+ years experience as a data scientist or data analyst in which you have independently extracted meaning from big data sets with little engineering support
- Successful track record of guiding product teams to identify high-impact opportunities, set meaningful goals against key outcomes, and data-driven decisions. Experience working in a two sided marketplaces environment and/or with machine learning preferred
- Mastery of SQL and proficiency in R/Python. Passionate to try new approaches to advance your technical skills. Bonus points for experience with the Spark ecosystem; and Looker, Tableau, or other data visualization software
- Experience with crafting and analyzing online experiments with a good understanding of A/B testing
- Ability to conduct sophisticated analyses and regularly use advanced statistical methods (ex. Propensity Score Matching, Causal Impact, Regression Models) in your work
- Comfortable with distilling complex insights into compelling narratives for senior executives, both verbally and visually
What the job involves
- As a Senior Data Scientist on the Ads team, you will be discovering insights that drive the strategy for the machine learning squads at the heart of Etsy’s Ads platform
- This data scientist will be responsible for delivering insights that shape the future of the Etsy Ads roadmap by developing and applying advanced measurement techniques
- This position acts as a leader and collaborator with product, design, engineering, and research to drive insights
- We are looking for someone who understands how to weigh opportunities, create unique insights, and is passionate about the intersection of machine learning and customer experience
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Manager, Product Analytics
- The role is a part of the Product Analytics team which is responsible for helping drive the success of product efforts at Etsy. We partner with cross-functional peers through all stages of development, using rigorous methods to: identify initial opportunities, refine the user experience, analyze the impact of our efforts, and highlight improvement areas. Ultimately, the team’s work strengthens Etsy and helps continuously improve the Etsy experience!

- Lead all analytical aspects of the product lifecycle from sizing opportunities all the way through to measuring success via experimentation for machine learning squads
- Work closely and collaboratively with senior management within Ads to craft a well defined analytics roadmap
- Use rigorous methods to conduct analysis and produce insights to improve the machine learning models that power Etsy Ads
- Define metrics to ensure robust measurement of product performance

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
