Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Python development, particularly with data-focused libraries like NumPy and Pandas, and a passion for crafting high-quality, production-level applications
- We're looking for someone who can think critically, work autonomously, and communicate effectively across all of our teams
- Ideal candidates will bring at least three years of professional Python experience, a solid understanding of the software development lifecycle, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning and innovation
- A background in finance, risk, data systems, and startup experience is a bonus
- 3+ years of professional Python development experience required
- 1+ years of hands-on experience with NumPy, Pandas, and the Python data ecosystem
- Strong experience building production applications and systems
- Solid understanding of software development lifecycle and agile methodologies
- Experience with version control systems (Git) and collaborative development workflows
- Expert-level Python programming with deep knowledge of language features and best practices
- Strong familiarity with Python frameworks and open-source libraries
- Knowledge of PEP 8 and Python coding standards
- Experience with testing frameworks (pytest, unittest) and test-driven development (TDD)
- Understanding of database systems and data modeling concepts
- Knowledge of software design patterns and clean code principles
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- Attention to detail and commitment to code quality

Desirable
- Computer Science degree or equivalent practical experience
- Experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Quantitative Developer

What the job involves
- Arbol's Engineering team is seeking a Python Engineer to help build the tools that support our innovative approach to climate risk and financial services
- You’ll work on designing and implementing new features and building tools that directly support the business
- You'll collaborate with quants, traders, and product teams to deliver impactful solutions, contribute to architecture decisions, and help drive best practices across the engineering organization
- Design and implement new features for Arbol's risk management tools and trading platforms
- Build and maintain Python libraries and frameworks used across the organization
- Develop APIs and microservices that integrate with external data providers and internal systems
- Create tools and applications for traders, risk managers, and senior management
- Write clean, testable, and well-documented code following industry standards
- Implement and maintain automated testing suites using modern testing frameworks
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to technical architecture decisions
- Champion best practices in software development and design patterns
- Work closely with quantitative researchers, traders, and risk management teams
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements
- Contribute to technical roadmap planning and technology selection
- Mentor junior developers and share knowledge across the team
Our take
$1 trillion of agricultural risk is not insured, much of it in developing nations, where many farmers do not have access to insurance at all. Small-hold farmers, or those facing variable weather conditions - only more frequent due to climate change - are last in line to receive coverage from traditional providers.
Arbol fulfils this gap with new technologies fit for these farmers needs. The startup offers parametric insurance codified on the Ethereum blockchain. That means it can utilize smart contracts, executing against hard parametric data to deliver automatic payments in two weeks or less. Weather risk for agriculture is Arbol’s primary coverage focus in its early stages, but it has already started rolling out smart contracts for other types of risk and industry.
Getting farmers paid in cases of conditions outside their control is a relatively simple concept. Arbol’s challenge is executing this. So far, it has done a great job of navigating customer education, complex datasets, evolving standards in the blockchain world, regulations, legal complexity, and a host of other challenges. And now with extra funding, the company is ready to widen the adoption of its products and establish climate risk as a tangible and investable asset class.
