Who you are
- We’re looking for a strategic, people-first leader to head our Developer Experience group
- This role requires a strong blend of technical leadership, organizational planning, and people management
- 5+ years of experience as an engineering leader, including experience managing managers and leading multiple teams
- Proven success in driving large scale changes to improve developer velocity and/or remove developer toil
- Deep understanding of developer workflows, CI/CD, testing frameworks, cloud infrastructure, and internal tooling
- Track record of driving change through influence, vision, and execution across large engineering organizations
- Experience managing infrastructure and developer platforms at scale, with a focus on reliability and usability
- Exposure to or curiosity about applying AI to developer tooling
- Strong communicator who can engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Passion for developer empathy, technical excellence, and creating an environment where engineers thrive
What the job involves
- The Developer Experience team owns the end-to-end developer tooling, workflows, and infrastructure that enable Lyft engineers to ship quickly, safely, and reliably with confidence
- This includes everything from source code management, development environments, language tooling, testing and debugging platforms, to CI and Build systems and infrastructure
- As the senior manager of this organization, you’ll define the vision, set the roadmap, and lead teams focused on building and evolving the platforms, tools, and workflows that power engineering across Lyft
- You’ll drive operational excellence, scale developer infrastructure, and explore new technologies. In particular, you’ll be identifying and deploying thoughtful applications of AI that will shape the future of software development
- You will play a critical role in shaping the engineering culture and driving development velocity at Lyft, ensuring that developers are supported by world-class tools and practices
- Vision & Strategy: Define and own the long-term vision for Developer Experience across the engineering organization; balance strategic investments with near-term execution
- Team Leadership: Lead multiple teams responsible for key developer platforms and services; organize and resource teams to align with business and engineering goals
- Technical Direction: Oversee architectural decisions, tech stack evolution, and engineering best practices
- Execution & Delivery: Set and track OKRs, SLOs, and KPIs; ensure timely delivery of high-impact projects that improve developer workflows and productivity
- Innovation & Impact: Identify areas where AI, automation, and emerging technologies can meaningfully enhance the developer experience
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, infrastructure, and security leaders to align on priorities and execution plans
- Team Development: Hire and retain top talent; invest in people’s career growth and build a strong culture of ownership, inclusion, and excellence
- Operational Excellence: Ensure systems are reliable, scalable, and continuously improving through clear processes and quality standards
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
