Role
Who you are
- Deep experience operating production systems in the cloud, particularly on AWS, and comfort owning infrastructure that supports critical customer-facing workloads
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code, ideally using Terraform, to define, version, and manage cloud infrastructure and platform resources in a repeatable, auditable way across environments
- Worked extensively with Kubernetes in real-world environments, including deploying, operating, and troubleshooting services at scale
- Strong hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and understand how small workflow decisions can dramatically impact developer velocity and reliability
- Empathize deeply with developers. You’ve felt the pain of slow builds, brittle deploys, unclear ownership, and noisy alerts—and you’re motivated to eliminate those problems through good system design
- Think in terms of platforms and leverage: building tools and abstractions that make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard, rather than relying on documentation alone
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and taking ownership of loosely defined problems, shaping them into concrete systems, standards, and outcomes
- Communicate clearly and pragmatically, especially when working across teams with different priorities and levels of infrastructure expertise
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to help evolve and operate Owner’s cloud and deployment platform as we continue to scale
- This is a senior individual-contributor role with broad ownership across infrastructure, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and developer enablement
- You’ll work closely with product engineering teams to understand where friction lives today, then design systems that remove it tomorrow
- This role sits at the intersection of reliability, security, and developer productivity, owning not just uptime, but the quality of the developer experience that produces it
- Design, build, and operate the core infrastructure that powers Owner’s engineering organization, with an emphasis on reliability, security, and ease of use
- Own and evolve our Kubernetes-based platform on AWS, improving how services are deployed, scaled, monitored, and secured in production
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that are fast, reliable, and easy to reason about by reducing deploy risk while increasing developer confidence and velocity
- Focus deeply on developer experience: identifying pain points in local development, testing, deployment, and observability, then replacing manual or error-prone workflows with self-service tooling and automation
- Partner closely with application engineers to set clear patterns and golden paths for how services are built and run at Owner, balancing flexibility with strong, opinionated defaults
- Strengthen our approach to operational excellence by improving monitoring, alerting, incident response, and post-incident learning
- Help embed security into our infrastructure and delivery pipelines, ensuring best practices are automated and invisible
Our take
The Pandemic caused a major upheaval in the US restaurant industry. Smaller operations struggled to stay afloat amidst brick-and-mortar closures, and as the demand for home delivery soared their margins were tightened further by hefty third-party delivery app charges. Add to that the fact that consumers become customers of the delivery app, not the restaurant itself, and it’s a development that has spelt real trouble for independent locales. Owner has set out to level the playing field.
Owner’s platform provides independent restaurants with the infrastructure they need to take control of their business without deferring to third-party apps like GrubHub and Deliveroo. It offers marketing, online ordering, and support solutions to over 1,000 restaurants across the U.S. The company has taken impressive first strides, too: they have a 7 figure run-rate, over 105% monthly revenue retention, and helped restaurants avoid millions in online order platform fees.
It’s a hugely attractive proposition for independent business owners, and research suggests it’s a winning idea for consumers too. Over 60% say they’d prefer to deal with restaurants directly, but historically the infrastructure simply hasn’t been in place to do so. With Owner seeing impressive traction by tripling its customers between 2023 and 2024, it's unsurprising that its 2024 funding is being channelled into engineering and design teams, alongside the development of new tools.
