Role
Who you are
- You thrive in a collaborative, innovative environment that moves fast, and you’re comfortable establishing structures and processes that drive the company's success
- At least 2-3 years of experience applying machine learning techniques, including experience across computer vision applications and predictive modeling
- BA / BS / BEng degree in Math, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or other related fields. MS degree or Ph.D. is certainly a bonus
- Strong understanding of machine learning, deep learning, and AI principles
- Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in implementing deep learning models and/or machine learning models
- Experience deploying predictive or deep learning models in production environments
- Proficiency in Python, along with experience using deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and related libraries (e.g., OpenCV, Pillow, Matplotlib, Plotly)
- Understanding of data preprocessing and augmentation techniques for large-scale image datasets (bonus if you’ve already worked with aerial or satellite imagery)
- Experience working with cloud computing (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, etc.)
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative development workflows
- Experience working with SQL, BigQuery
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment
- Strong organizational and management skills with experience implementing best practices and processes
- Strong communication skills
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
What the job involves
- As a Data Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in our Data Science and Machine Learning team. You will scale the development of top-tier models by leveraging diverse data sources, providing valuable insights, and maximizing the impact of our products
- Explore data sources and develop new Property Tech and InsurTech models with data science, including Machine Learning and Deep Learning
- Implement deep learning algorithms and architectures that extract insights from aerial imagery, satellite imagery, and geospatial data
- Research and model aspects of property risk utilizing imagery, hazard data, geospatial data, and other data sources
- Lead high-quality dataset development for robust model training and evaluation
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and translate product management, engineering, and business constraints and inquiries into actionable data science questions

Due to the scarcity of this information, many homeowners and businesses struggle to get insured due to unrealistic risk forecasts.
Zesty.ai provides an AI-driven insurance intelligence platform, collecting granular information on properties such as aerial imagery, permits, and weather to offer insurance providers a more detailed understanding of a property’s risk. The company claims that this approach will help clients get insurance when they otherwise couldn't, whilst allowing insurance providers to tap into a new market.
Whilst other insurance startups are leveraging AI to provide more data-driven insights into risk levels, Zesty.ai has uniquely specialized in climate-related data such as aerial imaging and weather, helping clients tackle the growing wildfire risks in the U.S. The company also archives such data for use in climate risk models to power AI-driven products such as fire, hail, and flood risk calculators.
