What the job involves
- Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games
- Discord is about giving people the power to create space to find belonging in their lives. We want to make it easier for you to talk regularly with the people you care about. We want you to build genuine relationships with your friends and communities close to home or around the world. Original, reliable, playful, and relatable. These are the values that connect our users and our employees at Discord
- We're looking for a highly motivated, mission-focused Senior Engineer to join our Engagement team. Engagement is responsible for improving the core value of Discord, including chatting, hanging out with friends, and expressing yourself
- We work on improving core features like messaging, voice chat, user profiles, and app navigation. You will work across the full stack to build delightful and impactful features that are focused on making Discord the best place to play games and hangout with your friends online
- We’re looking for engineers that have strong product sense and are fearless in jumping between technical stacks. You’ll be working with highly experienced engineering peers and cross functional partners
- Building delightful products with a very high bar for quality, performance, and a focus on impact
- Working with Product, Design, Data Science, UX Research, and Marketing to shape the team’s vision and roadmap
- Helping find the right solutions that balance delight, speed of delivery, and impact by collaborating with design and product partners
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 90M daily active users in 19M communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and X, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord's remarkable growth, however, isn't without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed rivals such as Meta and ongoing scrutiny over moderation and user safety. Despite this, Discord has continued to strengthen its platform through investments in privacy and accessibility, including the rollout of end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls for all users and the launch of a native Windows on ARM app to improve performance on next-generation devices. Alongside acquisitions such as Sentropy and Gas, these developments show just how hard Discord is pushing beyond its gaming roots.
