Who you are

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
Strong programming skills in C++ and Python, with experience in backend and pipeline development, and some SQL knowledge
Excellent communication, documentation, and teamwork skills, with the ability to quickly learn and integrate complex systems

Desirable

Ability to write performant C++ code, making sound design and architectural decisions
Experience with data analysis, LLM/ML, machine learning applications, and familiarity with common sensor data (e.g., camera images, LiDAR point clouds)
Previous internship experience, with some exposure to frontend web development (preferably Angular or React)

What the job involves

Design and implement efficient C++ code to contribute to the existing codebase and adapt state-of-the-art ML models for synthetic scene rendering and sensor data generation
Collect and analyze metrics related to simulation reproducibility, performance, and the effectiveness of architectural optimization choices, and conduct experiments to evaluate synthetic data quality
Collaborate with the intern host on project design, write design documentation, integrate generated data into the Waymo simulation platform, and participate in discussion meetings and code reviews

Our take

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.

With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
