Role
Who you are
- You’ll be a collaborative team member and know that design doesn’t happen in a bubble
- You’ll have a user-centred approach, using data and testing your work with users to improve and iterate on it
- You’ll understand the constraints and opportunities when designing experiences for the web and mobile applications
- You’ll have a good understanding of behavioural design and habit-forming principles
- You’ll be comfortable dealing with multiple project deadlines and changing timescales
- You’ll be comfortable working in Figma
- You will have a strong knowledge and practice of designing tools for gig workers or contractors and forcomplex applications
- You’ll have strong visual design skills, including a strong knowledge of typography, colour theory, layout, hierarchy among others
- As a member of the design community, you’ll share best practice and uncover new ways to make design more effective across the organisation
- You will have previous experience of running workshops and gathering requirements
What the job involves
- You’ll be embedded in our Tutors squad, a cross-functional squad responsible for helping our Tutors, who are mainly university students and recent graduates, find and keep work, while having a great experience teaching with us
- As a designer in the squad you’ll be working closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Designers and the Data teams to help us improve and enhance the Tutor experience across our web and app platforms. Beyond the squad you will report into a Lead Product Designer, joining a multi-disciplinary team of 8 Designers
- Leading initiatives focused on improving the Tutor experience with the Product Manager and Tech Lead, particularly the onboarding flow and tutor companion app
- Identifying problem areas and pain points for our tutors using a variety of research methods, and designing ways to solve them
- Balancing the needs of tutors and business needs to inform design and product decisions
- Being the voice of our tutors to influence decision-making and prioritisation
- Building strong relationships with both Product-engineering and wider stakeholders in tutor space
- Sharing your work and design decisions with peers and stakeholders for feedback

Salary benchmarks
Our take
Private tutoring is a huge market traditionally dominated by expensive agencies (who charge extortionate hourly rates and take a big cut from the tutors that work for them by acting as the middleman).
The average starting price for tutoring can hit £50 an hour in London, MyTutor’s prices start from a much more affordable £18 an hour (the company can charge this low by cutting out the middle man).
MyTutor has built technologies to make online tutoring sessions smooth (e.g. it built an online whiteboard and makes it easy to share documents and upload past papers). All sessions are recorded so you can also play them back when they've finished. Along with academic support, the company prides itself in building confidence and providing mentorship.
The online EdTech industry has really blown up over the past few years and it highlighted the need for an online service that helps fill the gaps in today’s education system by delivering personalised support tailored to the individual. As MyTutor is conducted purely online, it can now really focus on providing quality education to a much wider audience.
