What the job involves
- As Director of Brand & MarComms at Jagex, you will lead the charge in developing a bold, transformative brand strategy for the RuneScape franchise and Jagex as a studio
- Your mission is to position our games and studio as leaders in the MMO and live-service gaming space, elevating brand presence across every touchpoint and driving global engagement
- This is a pivotal, high-impact leadership role within our marketing team, where you’ll collaborate closely with Product Marketing, Creative, and Development teams to define what our games stand for, who they are for, and how we bring them to life across different platforms, channels and audiences
- Develop and execute a comprehensive brand strategy for the RuneScape Franchise and Jagex Corporate Brand, aligned with business objectives and target audiences
- Conduct in-depth market research and analyze player data to identify and understand existing and potential player audiences for the RuneScape Franchise
- Develop audience segmentation and persona profiles to inform brand positioning, messaging, and marketing strategies
- Manage and oversee the brand portfolio for the RuneScape Franchise, ensuring consistency and effectiveness across all touchpoints
- Work with Product Marketing Directors to build effective Go-To-Market Plans for our future new titles
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, product, and creative, to deliver cohesive brand experiences for the RuneScape Franchise and Jagex Corporate Brand that resonate with target audiences
- Build a transmedia strategy for the RuneScape IP, identifying opportunities to expand the brand across various media platforms, partnerships, and touchpoints
- Monitor and report on brand health metrics and player engagement, providing strategic recommendations for improvement and audience expansion
- Directly manage the Public Relations team and work closely with Internal Communications groups to ensure consistent messaging and brand alignment
Our take
Founded in 2000, Jagex is the video game studio behind the RuneScape titles. It is one of the largest British video game studios, having ammased 2.4 million active subscribers, one million free-to-play users, and over 300 million lifetime RuneScape accounts.
Jagex specialises in "forever games", in which players can continue to discover new experiences and challenges without ever reaching an end. RuneScape is a perfect example of this approach, still receiving updates over twenty years after its initial release.
On top of the RuneScape franchise, the company's acquisition of Gamepires brought titles such as SCUM under the company's banner, which it is also working to make into a forever game. It also acquired Pipeworks - adding a Games-as-a-Service platform to its broadening portfolio.
In 2024, it was announced that Jagex would be bought by CVC Capital Partners and Haveli Investments. This represents a move that will position it well to pursue creating more new and innovative player experiences in the future.
