Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of software engineering experience in building large-scale distributed cloud storage systems or data platforms
- Proficiency in Python and C++, or similar languages, with emphasis on writing clean, maintainable code
- Extensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred), including S3, Aurora, and EC2
- Proven experience designing and operating large-scale data ingestion and storage systems handling petabytes of data
- Demonstrated strong ownership by driving projects from conception to completion and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams through clear communication
Desirable
- Knowledge of data cataloging systems, metadata management, storage optimization, and data governance
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools (such as Grafana, Cloudwatch)
What the job involves
- The Robot Data Platform team, as part of the Data Infrastructure organization, builds and operates the systems that manage data generated by Zoox’s autonomous vehicle fleet
- We design, scale, and maintain infrastructure that ingests, stores, and serves hundreds of petabytes of vehicle data, empowering machine learning, data science, software engineering, fleet management, and safety analysis across the company
- As a member of this team, you’ll work alongside world-class software engineers to solve complex challenges in large-scale distributed data platforms, systems, and pipelines, shaping how Zoox leverages data to advance autonomous transportation
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable systems for collecting, cataloging, storing, and processing petabytes of vehicle data
- Architect robust log data storage solutions using AWS S3, and distributed systems to ensure data integrity and availability
- Lead technical design discussions, create design documents, and drive architectural decisions for complex data platform features
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and operational tooling to ensure high availability and reliability of data pipelines processing thousands of runs daily
- Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and establish best practices for data platform development
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in data ingestion and storage systems, participating in on-call rotations
Our take
Zoox, a self-driving vehicle company, was founded to make personal transportation safer and more enjoyable for all. It has aimed to achieve this goal by creating a new mode of driverless transportation, thus eradicating the safety and logistical issues that come with human drivers.
It revealed its custom vehicle design in December 2020, showcasing something different from just a car without a driver. Uniquely, all four wheels are independent of one another, and the vehicles have no front or back, making them more agile than a standard car. Zoox claims that it is different from other industry players because it has created an entire driverless ecosystem, including the vehicle itself, allowing it to have more control.
The company is fast becoming a major player in an industry that is predicted to be worth $2 trillion by 2030. Electric motors are highly desirable, particularly in an urban environment, as governments look for ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Zoox is aiming to play a vital role in this evolution towards more sustainable urban mobility. Amazon acquired the company in 2020 and, despite a general downturn in the sector through 2022, opened its first Zoox factory for robotaxis in 2025, and is testing the autonomous vehicles in multiple cities in the US.
