Company mission

To empower commercial insurers to write better risks, faser.

Role

Who you are

  • You’ve worked across roles as a designer/frontend engineer for 8+ years. We appreciate that every design engineer has a different "T-shape", so you don't need to have been a "design engineer" for the whole of your career, but you do need to have held both roles in a meaningful way
  • You thrive in a scale-up environment, where you'll have significant autonomy but must balance multiple priorities and customer needs
  • You're proficient in modern JavaScript/TypeScript and React. While you won't be expected to lead frontend engineering, you can contribute to production-quality experiences and understand how design choices impact frontend engineering feasibility, performance and maintainability
  • You excel at advocating for your ideas—both verbally and in writing—while remaining receptive to feedback and adapting your approach to ship effective solutions

Desirable

  • Experience building and maintaining design systems (and use of primitive components)
  • Experience designing for complex domains (e.g. insurtech, fintech or healthcare) and on B2B SaaS products
  • Experience working in distributed teams at startups/scale-ups
  • Although the design team is distributed, we aim to meet face-to-face when it makes sense. Ideally, you’ll be willing and able to visit our office in London occasionally

What the job involves

  • Lead discovery and shaping phases: uncover customer problems and identify high-level solutions in collaboration with customers and internal stakeholders
  • Build working prototypes using React, our existing codebase, and sometimes Figma
  • Adapt existing components to create UX flows and high-fidelity visuals
  • Own design direction on cross-functional Bet teams. You’ll be responsible for the quality of the end-user experience and finding elegant design solutions to complex problems
  • Improve product usability and performance through iterative improvements (often in collaboration with other teams)
  • Expand our React-based design system (of components and primitives) using Storybook
  • Participate in weekly design critiques and ad-hoc design pairing sessions with other team members
  • Help champion the role of design across the business
  • We use an adapted Shape Up methodology, alternating between major new feature development ("Bets") and ongoing iterative improvements

Our take

The traditional insurance life cycle is tricky to navigate for insurers and their customers, with endless paperwork and costly manual processes. Artificial is setting out to allow insurers and brokers to capture valuable data and digitally quote, bind, and issue policies, increasing efficiency and reducing the administrative burden on brokers and underwriters.

These tools are built on top of a shared core, called ArtificialOS, which is a suite of powerful, API-driven building blocks, for insurers of all sizes. Ranging from policy management to AI-based automated claims, Artificial's service-based architecture means they can very quickly combine these blocks and integrate applications according to insurer requirements.

Artificial has strong traction in the marketplace and has launched multiple partnerships with insurance groups to expand its provision of a smarter and more efficient underwriting service to brokers and clients. The company is continuing to invest in its machine learning capabilities which will provide customers with a further competitive edge in the future.
