Who you are
- Proficient in Python, with solid understanding and practical experience beyond basic familiarity
- Experience in working with data models, building specific machine learning models using DBT, and orchestrating workflows with Dagster or Argo Workflows for example
- Preferred ML experience: Proven success in designing and optimizing ML services, with a strong emphasis on diagnosing and preventing performance issues
- Curiosity and Innovation: The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong curiosity and willingness to explore uncharted territory. They should be open to experimenting with novel approaches, even if it means stepping outside their comfort zone
- Data-driven analytical mindset with attention to detail, ensuring precision in all aspects of ML development and problem-solving
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, enabling effective communication, team collaboration, and the ability to positively influence team dynamics
- Proven capability in project execution, from clear definition through tactical implementation, with adaptability to lead projects to successful outcomes

What the job involves
- As Senior Software Engineer , Machine Learning at Swapcard, you will be a key member of the Swapcard Lab team, focusing on developing and maintaining our recommendation system and meetings generator
- The Lab is the business and research division of Swapcard, driving innovation in artificial intelligence
- You'll collaborate with a Senior Machine Learning/AI Research Scientist and other experts to shape the future of AI in the events industry
- Developing and Implementing ML architecture: Involvement in designing ML models to generate new, valuable content or features for the product. Following MLOps principales to drive Design, Development, and Operations excellence. Solid foundation in data science and machine learning principles, as well as creativity and innovation to explore new solutions
- Data Analysis and Interpretation: Turning complex data into actionable insights is crucial for guiding the development of features that meet user needs and enhance the product's value proposition
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Working closely with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensuring that ML initiatives align with the overall product strategy and business goals
- Advocating for Technical Excellence: Pushing for high standards in code quality, security, and performance, and maintaining these through code reviews and best practices
- Solving Complex Problems: Taking on high-level technical challenges and driving solutions that have a broad impact on the team and product
- Operational Support: Participating in war-room to troubleshoot and resolve critical issues
- Currently, the Lab is focused on three key areas :
- Matchmaking – Delivering personalized recommendations for networking, sessions, exhibitors, and products to enhance engagement and interactions before, during, and after events
- Meaningful Insights – Providing organizers with valuable insights into audience engagement through various indicators, helping assess engagement levels across content, networking, and overall participation
- Large Language Models (LLM) – A future focus area for the team, aimed at evolving event organizer support by fine-tuning LLMs with event data. This includes generating event templates, summaries, and automatic filters, streamlining operational processes and scalability

Our take
Events platform Swapcard is a major player in the events software industry, and like many others, it has had to adapt fast to the 2020 spike in demand for virtual events. It did so impressively, with an end-to-end solution that includes registration, engagement, and networking tools, as well as some novel details like an AI-powered guest matchmaking service.
Acquisitions of MapsPeople and Avolio have seen Swapcard deepening its suite of tools, which is reflective of Swapcard’s broader gamble: that as events persist in a combination of digital, hybrid, and in-person formats, customers are looking for a single tech provider capable of handling all aspects. This may not, however, be a given. Rival events platform Grip pulled ahead of Swapcard in terms of funding over recent years, which it credits to a consumer preference for its plug-in-and-play networking features. So complementary, not comprehensive, events tools were Grip's route to gaining traction in the transforming sector.
Nevertheless, customers like SXSW, Expo Dubai 2020, and Informa are among the high-profile enterprise clients pursuing Swapcard’s services. In a market expected to grow fairly rapidly over the next few years, these players may in fact provide a more valuable vote of confidence than its rivals’ influx of VC investment.
