Who you are
- The ideal candidate has operated in the finance function at an early-stage, fast-growing SaaS company and is excited to build out a finance function from scratch in a similar environment again.
- You are scrappy, enjoy rolling up your sleeves, detail and execution oriented, and think strategically about how finance can help drive a fast-growing business.
- Previous to working in a SaaS startup, you may have worked in investment banking, PE/VC, financial management, accounting, or controlling, with at minimum of at least 6 years of experience total.
What the job involves
- As the First Finance Lead, you will wear many hats - and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, metrics reporting, and compliance. You will report to the CEO and be responsible for the numbers that drive executive and Board-level decision making
- This is a unique opportunity to be the first leader in a finance organization at a fast-growing SaaS company with healthy financials, significant runway, and a strong cultural commitment to high performance and velocity. We have very ambitious (and achievable) targets and want to partner with you to reach them
- Design, own, and execute on company metrics and reporting (for Board, exec team, and ongoing operations)
- Build and update financial models and forecasts, and provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making by the executive team
- Assess the financial viability of new projects, partnerships, and growth opportunities
- Support executive team in materials preparation for investor due diligence
- Select, set up, and own software systems and processes to streamline and/or automate finance operations, where appropriate
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on finance and operations
- Manage outsourced bookkeepers to ensure accurate and timely close, A/P, A/R, employee expense reimbursement, commissions payouts, and payroll processing for full-time employees and contractors
- Prepare accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Manage and optimize the company's cash flow, cash flow forecasting and cash management strategies
- Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting principles, standards, and regulations
- Oversee the timely and accurate preparation of tax filings, including corporate income tax and sales tax
- Collaborate with external auditors for periodic audits and ensure compliance with audit requirements
- Ensure compliance with relevant employer regulations (e.g., registration with state employment boards)
- Collaborate with functional leaders to own, track, analyze, and optimize SaaS (and other large line-item) spending
Our take
Knowledge workers spend, by some reports, around one-fifth of their time simply working out how to do their job. Where historically this might have demanded lengthy, labour-intensive user guides and training manuals, Scribe has brought to market an efficient new alternative, where all users need to do is record their screen whilst carrying out a task.
From there, the company creates text descriptions and interactive screenshots for each step, which can be shared with a simple link. Scribe has accrued an impressive customer base since it launched in beta back in 2020, with over 600,000 companies, including Adobe, Facebook, Tesla, and EA using its product and 94% of Fortune 500 businesses. Demand looks likely to continue, with hybrid workforces still widespread post-pandemic.
Founder Jennifer Smith is versed in the inefficiencies of knowledge-sharing within companies from a stint at Mckinsey, and her co-founder Aaron Podolny was previously CTO at automated customer service and sales tools company, Onward. With strong funding secured, Scribe’s impressive success to date looks only set to continue as it scales its team and invests in R&D to propel the development of its platform.
