To make low-carbon concrete a reality, saving costs, bringing production processes up to speed for 21st century concrete recipes, and saving half of Europe’s CO2 emissions.
Concrete is one of the most-used materials in human society - at around 30 billion tons per year it comes in second only to water. But the processes used in making it date back to the 19th century and release half a ton of carbon dioxide for every ton of concrete produced, accounting for almost 10% of all global emissions. alcemy, a German startup, aims to fix this with an AI-powered quality control process that allows for high quality, low-carbon concrete to be produced at scale.
alcemy is a pioneer in using AI for this purpose, and its machine learning and control technology allows it to stand out in a field which is beginning to attract a lot of attention. alcemy's solution reduces manual intervention by 80% in a process where quality has to be tightly controlled to achieve carbon savings. So far 5 million tons of cement has been produced and 80,000 tons of carbon dioxide has been saved using its software.
Alcemy has recently completed a Series A funding round led by Galvanize Climate Solutions. It will use this funding to expand its software development talent and build a sales team to drive its adoption in the market. In the long term it has the goal of making low-carbon concrete the standard in the EU and to reduce carbon emissions by one billion tons within ten years.
