Role
Who you are
- Collective is seeking a Software Engineer passionate about tackling complex challenges in both new and existing systems
- 4+ years of professional experience in full-stack development, with a strong focus on modern frontend systems (e.g., React, Vue, or Angular), and the flexibility to dive into backend development or other areas as needed to move the product forward
- Expertise in core frontend technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/TypeScript) and experience with state management libraries (e.g., Redux, MobX, or similar)
- Proven experience with performance optimization, browser debugging, and ensuring cross-browser compatibility
- Proven experience in designing, developing, and deploying AI/ML models or automation solutions in a production environment, including experience working on applied AI initiatives
- Experience with programming languages commonly used in AI/ML (e.g., Python) and web development
- Curious to explore new technologies, with the ability to thoughtfully leverage AI to enhance product experiences and rapidly address design/UX challenges
- A strong sense of urgency and ownership in driving projects from design through execution and support
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
What the job involves

- This is an exciting opportunity to develop a foundational feature that will shape how Collective functions and expands
- As a senior engineer on this team, you will directly improve productivity, reduce operational hurdles, and help serve our expanding community of entrepreneurs by building innovative AI solutions
- This role is critical to achieving non-linear scalability, where our business expansion significantly outpaces increases in operational headcount
- Design and develop highly performant, accessible, and responsive user interfaces using modern JavaScript frameworks
- Proactively leverage Generative AI and related tools to rapidly prototype, iterate on, and build intuitive user experiences, ensuring design does not become a bottleneck for product development
- Collaborate closely with UX/UI designers to translate high-fidelity mockups and interaction models into functional, production-ready code
- Implement compelling user experiences for our AI/ML solutions (including Agents, RAG, and related pipelines), focusing on data visualization and intuitive interaction
- Build end-to-end product features in close partnership with product and design teams. Take extreme ownership across the full lifecycle: design, execution, launch, and post-production support
- Champion best practices in software development, frontend architecture, MLOps, CI/CD, and platform development
- Stay current with advancements in AI and drive innovation through proof-of-concepts and pilot programs
- Lead by example, foster a culture of growth and learning, and mentor other engineers
- Approach problems with a strong product mindset—balancing technical decisions with customer impact
- Tech stack & environment:
- Core: Python (Django/FastAPI), React, TypeScript
- Data/Infra: PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, Docker/Kubernetes
- AI/ML (Emerging): LLM integration (OpenAI/Anthropic), LangChain/LangGraph, Vector Databases, and Agentic frameworks

Collective is tapping into the quickly growing freelance and self employed workforce with a back office platform which provides full support for accounting, tax, book keeping and other financial admin, essentially removing the burden from the business owner entirely.
Having only launched in 2020, Collective didn’t take long to receive major backing from General Catalyst as well as Ashton Kutcher’s VC fund Sound Ventures. It’s put it to great use too, with an employee headcount now in the hundreds, showing just how fast the startup is growing.
Interestingly, Collective isn’t available for any and all subscribers. Rather, it only allows applicants to become members if Collective’s advisors know they can offer real value. It may seem a counter-intuitive move, but it keeps the company’s success rate high.
The company's latest 2023 funding round is being used to accelerate the implementation of AI across its operations as well as onboard the nearly 100,000 waitlisted businesses. it launched an AI accounting platform for one-person operations in 2024, exemplifying the savvy use of its funds.
