Role
Who you are
- At least 2 years of practice in business law gained at a major Canadian law firm and/or in-house legal department of a technology company
- Qualified lawyer/solicitor licensed to practice law in Canada
- Strong legal and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate legal advice effectively
- Knowledge of US and UK/EU law is an asset
- Knowledge of technology and commercial law, data protection and privacy law, and intellectual property law
- Knowledge of on-prem, PaaS, RFP/RFI processes, Master Service Agreements, and IP contracts is an asset
- Excellent negotiating and drafting skills
- Skilled in building and maintaining strong professional relationships across the business
- The ability to communicate complex legal issues and risks in terms that non-legal colleagues can understand
- The ability to work in a highly autonomous role
- Ability to work under pressure and meet time sensitive deadlines
What the job involves
- We need a passionate and detail-oriented professional to help us drive legal innovation forward
- As our Corporate Paralegal, you’ll handle essential legal duties including working with colleagues on internal teams to review compliance measures, as well as liaising with third-party bodies
- Review, track, and monitor legislation that impacts the company’s products and processes
- Update leadership with timely analysis and summaries of new legislation and regulations affecting the business
- Help implement changes to contracts to comply with legislation, regulations, and other changes
- Provide support related to administration including meeting minutes, organizing precedence, drafting and completing various business documents, legal contracts, correspondence, and other documents
- Support lawyers in corporate legal practice
- Working with the People & Culture team and other departments such as Security, IT, and Data Protection to ensure legal compliance. This would include Privacy, Corruption (active and passive), Fraud, Conflict of Interest, Anti-Competition, Anti-Money Laundering, Integrity, Business Human Rights, Whistleblower System, and Employee and Business Partner Code of Conduct
- Advise internal teams on a broad spectrum of legal and business issues including international data protection requirements, contractual commitments, industry-specific compliance obligations, intellectual property rights, and employment issues
- Create organizational documents
- Draft and edit corporate contracts – especially NDAs
- Assist with the paperwork needed by regulatory bodies
- Perform legal research and prepare memorandums
- Attend negotiations and meetings to take meeting minutes and develop summaries
