Our take

While software with human-level intelligence has been dreamt about for decades, only recent advances in AI have convinced investors and researchers that general machine intelligence may be achievable. Generally Intelligent is a research lab attempting to help make that dream a reality, by researching the fundamentals of human intelligence that machines currently lack.

The research lab is focused primarily on self-supervised and generative video and audio models, and has already secured significant funding including from several luminaries in the field. Crucially, the lab sees itself as able to make significant progress in the field because its researchers don't have the pressure present in academia to be constantly publishing, so they can think about things more long term.

On that front, the startup is pushing forward by leveraging self-supervised learning models, now almost on par with supervised ones, taking a focused, engineering-driven approach to its research. With the current spotlight on AI and its future across industries, Generally Intelligent will likely see more attention in the coming years, as it moves to make general-purpose AI a reality.
