Who you are
- A strong product mindset and genuine passion for user experience — you prioritize customer value and make data-driven decisions

- Experience with relational and non-relational databases, query optimization, and schema design is a plus
- Familiarity with Java, Spring Boot, and messaging systems like Kafka is a plus
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our team and help us create a scalable, secure, and reliable global platform
- You’ll work on high-impact projects that make it easier for people and businesses everywhere to send and receive money, no matter where they are
- The Receive Risk team is a global product team focused on making it safe and seamless for customers to receive money into their Wise accounts
- We build intelligent systems and controls to detect and stop fraudsters and scammers — protecting both Wise and our customers
- We support all of our receive products (like local and global account details, payment links, and invoicing) and work closely with our Financial Crime teams to ensure these tools are low-friction for good users, and high-friction for the bad ones
- You’ve found your footing in the team and understand how your work connects to the broader mission
- You’re using Wise’s values to guide your decision-making
- You understand the root causes of customer payment issues and actively help solve them
- You’re contributing to automation efforts that help us scale efficiently
- You’ve built empathy for our users and the real-world impact of our product
- You’re solving technical challenges and helping us build a world-class global banking product

Our take
Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.
Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. Its attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.
While the market is crowded with new entrants (think Revolut and Monzo) and traditional banks trying to catch up, Wise is still staying one step ahead having recently opened a new hub in India and new payment features as well as reporting a rise in key metrics on higher volume and customer growth. This continued growth positions the company well for continued success in the future.
