Role
Who you are
- Experience with industrial automation components such as pneumatics, sensors, motors & drives, robots, power trains, general machine design, technical drawing preparation, various manufacturing techniques, knowledge of materials and general fabrication techniques
- Familiarity with the design and use for any or all the following mechanical aspects production processes: machining, and additive manufacturing
- Familiarity with the design and use for any or all the following electrical aspects production processes: AC/DC electrical circuits about 100W, DC electrical circuits below 10 W, Op-Amps, Communication Protocols (serial, differential, high speed) , Test Equipment ( multimeters , oscilloscopes, lab supplies ) , soldering , wiring , debugging
- Familiarity with the design and use for any or all the following software aspects: Programming Languages ( C++ , python ) , Software Repositories ( Git, Bitbucket ) , Editors / IDE ( VsCode, vi ) , familiarity with Linux
- Experienced working in a cross functional team environment, including both technical and non-technical interaction
What the job involves
- We are seeking to hire software interns for the fall. We have positions open in our workstation group
- We are developing a revolutionary robotic order-fulfillment technology that can be deployed cost-effectively at store level, enabling retailers to operate a new type of retail store
- Design mechanical and mechatronic components and subsystems of custom automation systems
- Work with interdisciplinary teams including electrical, systems, and safety to assist in the definition of mechanical design requirements
- Participate in the design meetings/reviews, machine debug, power-up, and machine validation and testing with the appropriate functional teams
- Create and manage highly detailed and functional 3D models and detail drawings
- Support the creation, development and release of component and system specifications and documentation, including ECO creation for releasing all product documentation to the PLM system
- Assist in the creation of component and subsystem design verification plans and test methods, as well as actual testing
- Interface with manufacturing group and suppliers for insuring feasibility and manufacturability of all designs

Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics is a division of Walmart focussed on building robotics and complimentary technology to streamline retail and fulfilment operations. Founded as Alert Innovation, the company has partnered with Walmart from the start, meaning it was no surprise when the retail giant acquired it in 2022.
The company's goal is to use robotics to replace labor-intensive processes, for example the gathering of requested items in fulfilment centers. Its Alphabot hybrid warehouse system provides automated picking that works alongside human workers, with robots retrieving items and delivering them to a picking station where workers can efficiently prepare the customer orders.
With such a unique position as a division of a major retailer, Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics should benefit from insight into the fulfilment issues that will most benefit from robotics automation. With more projects in development, it will be interesting see what it tackles next in grocery supply chain automation or beyond.
