Who you are
- 2+ years of work or volunteer experience in a role that required project management and people management/coordination
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and analytical skills
- Ability to manage day-to-day operations and propose & implement process improvements
- Demonstrated ability to work in a highly independent and self-directed manner, while effectively communicating upwardly about gaps and risks
- Enthusiasm for fast-paced environments, which may lack a pre-defined playbook for success and involve significant “learning by doing”

What the job involves
- Customer Service:
- Serve as a trusted resource for members of the community, local organizations, and recipients, responding to their communications in a timely and professional manner
- Lead customer service, including directly supporting recipients via an email-based help desk and through phone support, as well as in-person assistance, as needed
- Follow protocols to resolve recipient cases through communication, data entry, and/or escalation of more serious matters to the appropriate individuals
- Program Management and Community Engagement:
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key community members, local service organizations, government agency officials, and elected officials
- Meet periodically with recipients in person to build trust and to identify problems or areas for program or process improvements
- With implementation partners and the Deputy Director, help to plan, monitor, and oversee the participant experience throughout the launch of the program
- Support the organizing and execution of community based meetings and events as needed
- Program Operations:
- Support a range of operational and project management duties to ensure GiveDirectly’s US projects are executed with excellence and in line with our values, including conducting research to inform recipient targeting and reporting out on progress and achievement
- Lead select field operational processes across US projects, including directly supporting recipients via the customer service help desk and conducting recipient follow-up surveys
- Work closely with other members of the US team to identify process challenges and propose solutions (e.g. increasing operational efficiency, improving recipient experience)
- Become an expert in GiveDirectly’s tech systems and processes to support project execution and excellence
- Track and report operational and efficiency metrics and report out to the US team
Our take
GiveDirectly is a non-profit organisation that specialises in giving direct cash transfers to low-income people, without strings attached. When the founder announced the idea in 2009, it was pretty radical at the time with many experts arguing the money would be misspent. However, 10 years later, there is now considerable evidence showing that cash improves the life of poor people more than equivalent spending on aid programs or goods.
GiveDirectly is known for its use of modern technology and rigorous scientific methods to document its impact. Notably, GiveDirectly was early to accept donations in cryptocurrency. The charity’s latest innovation is harnessing an algorithm, designed by UC Berkeley, that uses artificial intelligence to identify the poorest individuals in the poorest areas, and transfer cash relief directly to them.
In 2021, GiveDirectly announced they had sent $1000 to more than 178,000 US households in need during the Pandemic. It is estimated that 98-99 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to giving, with the company needing little for overhead.
