Role
Who you are
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- 7+ years of prior experience designing and developing real-time systems and middleware in C++ targeting a safety critical, resource constrained environment
- Demonstrated expertise in real-time system development with proven familiarity in core concepts like networking, logging, diagnostics, and exception handling
- Significant experience with and understanding of Linux based environments
- Proven management and technical leadership ability with prior experience directly managing teams of experienced C++ developers
- Prior experience leading onboard infrastructure development in a self driving or robotics company is highly preferred
What the job involves
- The Onboard Infrastructure (OI) team is responsible for delivering the on vehicle software infrastructure that supports Stack’s real-time autonomous driving system
- The team is composed of seasoned experts in real-time operating system and middleware software development for autonomous applications
- Lead and manage a team of highly experienced software engineers focused on C++ development of real-time, highly performant and resilient middleware for autonomous applications. Middleware covers all communications (inter and intra node), diagnostics, process management, memory management, logging, startup, shutdown and OS configuration. Implementations need to be both performant and safety critical
- Set the vision and drive the short and long term roadmaps for onboard infrastructure at Stack
- Collaborate cross functionally across the organization to define requirements for onboard infrastructure and drive projects from inception to completion
- Lead the design and implementation of onboard infrastructure supporting the needs for a high performance, reliable, and observable runtime environment for our Self Driving System (SDS)
- Lead the design and implementation of onboard middleware responsible for integrating sensor (LiDAR, Radar and Cameras), IMU, GNSS, PTP, and other fundamental data used by the SDS
- Actively contribute to the code base, design & code reviews and hold the team to a high bar for code quality, build and test automation, and system metrics for observability
- Own all managerial responsibilities for the team including hiring, performance management, and career development
Our take
Driver shortages, decelerating efficiency and broad safety concerns have plagued the US trucking industry for some time now. High operating costs paired with increasingly scrutinized high emissions are leading to concern over the future of the logistics and goods transport market. Stack AV’s autonomous trucking solution aims to lighten the load of these issues, using AI to create smart supply chains and autonomous driving systems.
Its founding team have long been exploring the possibilities of autonomous transport through combined experience with Uber, and Google smart cars and shared founding roles at Argo AI, a similar company that disbanded in 2022 after it failed to become profitable for shareholders. Hopefully, however, the launch of Stack AV will balance the decades of experience as well as hard lessons learnt from the failed predecessor company and will find new ways to make autonomous driving tech a sustainable investment.
With a staggering $1 billion invested in Stack AV by SoftBank in 2023, the company is well-armoured for the time being. Its main competitor is Aurora, which underwent a successful IPO in 2021 but never achieved the high level of early funding that Stack AV did. It’s a promising start then for the Argo AI veterans' new venture.
