Who you are
- +3 years of proven experience leading and managing a data science team
- +4 years of hands-on data experience in commercial industries
- Previous experience working in high-paced scale-up or start-up environments
- Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated track record of successfully implementing data-driven solutions with a focus on climate risk prediction
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a team
- Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data science (Python, R, etc.)
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) a plus
What the job involves
- Mitiga Solutions is searching for a visionary and experienced Head of Data Science to lead our growing data science team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our climate risk solutions
- Develop and champion a data science strategy aligned with Mitiga Solutions' overall business goals
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to the data science team, ensuring strong alignment with company objectives (+3 years of experience leading Data teams required)
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Science, Tech, Product, Sales) to embed data insights into core decision-making processes
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the company to foster a data-driven culture and champion the value of AI and data science
- Lead the recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of a high-performing data science team and data visualization experts
- Cultivate a collaborative and innovative team environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and continuous learning
- Establish and enforce data governance and quality assurance policies to ensure data integrity and security
- Partner with cross-functional teams to identify and address data-related challenges and opportunities related to climate risk prediction
- Serve as a strategic advisor to company leadership, providing data-driven insights that contribute to Mitiga's growth and competitive edge
- Work closely with the data science team to develop and implement advanced analytics models, machine learning algorithms, and artificial intelligence solutions in the climate risk domain
Our take
As the threat of climate change-induced disasters increases, so too does the difficulty in accurately assessing the risks and costs to business and property. Mitiga Solutions, a Barcelona-based climate tech firm, aims to prevent natural hazards from transforming into full-blown disasters by equipping its customers with accurate risk predictions.
With a data-heavy, science-based approach, Mitiga predicts climate-driven risks such as wildfires, extreme weather and even volcanoes. This aids insurers, financial institutions, and real estate players in comprehending and mitigating risks effectively. Compared to traditional risk modelling, its AI-assisted approach is more cost-effective despite its heavy use of computing resources, giving it an edge in the market.
Mitiga has raised significant funding that continues to facilitate the expansion of its talent pool and the refinement of its tools, for example with the scaling of its risk models to create a global Climate Score for clients. On top of this, in 2023 it acquired the IP rights of Cervest, a leading cloud-based climate intelligence company, to further solidify its position and support sustainable growth.
