What the job involves

We are looking for a Strategic Merchant Lead for the Outside Sales team to establish partnerships with our top local and Mid-Market merchants across the country
Establish partnerships with our top prospective merchants across the country in some of our newest segments. As DoorDash continues its mission to be the leading partner in last mile logistics, it is the job of the Strategic Merchant Lead to grow our selection, increasing customer adoption and conversion to our non-restaurant lines of business
Partner with integral local hero merchants by helping them understand the value of DoorDash’s full suite of services (e.g. Marketplace, DashMart, POS Integration)
Master our service offerings — address merchant issues by solving problems and applying product knowledge to win deals while sharing learnings with leadership to develop solutions improving the merchant and customer experience
Lead complex negotiations to structure industry-leading and mutually beneficial economic terms
Accelerate a highly organized sales cycle with the goal of closing deals within a few weeks
Collaborate alongside multiple teams — work with our Senior Strategic Sales Managers, Partner Management, as well central functions (Strategy, Drive, POS, and Marketing) to extract the most value possible from our top accounts

Our take

DoorDash was an early entrant into the last-mile restaurant delivery business, which is now crowded with the likes of Uber Eats, Postmates and GrubHub. They offer restaurants an end-to-end delivery platform, generating new business and access to a network of delivery drivers.

To differentiate itself in the market, DoorDash focused on areas with fewer competitors and found success in this untapped market. Other factors, such as the company's targeting of restaurants which many not typically offer a delivery service, also contribute to its profitability. The company made its stock market debut in 2020 with one of the biggest IPOs of the year.

However, in light of increasing discontent around DoorDash's commission structure from restaurants, competition remains fierce. The business recently responded by publishing a transparent fee structure, but the number of options open to restaurants means DoorDash must fight to keep its customers loyal. Despite this, by focusing on consumer retention, logistics and technology, the company is likely able to maintain its existing growth and revenue.
