Who you are
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business analytics, data science or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 6 years of Engineering experience required
- 5+ years of analytic experience working with and manipulating large datasets and driving projects through the agile development lifecycle; experience must include working with various data storage platforms (ie Postgres/SQL), at least one scripting language for data analysis (Python), experience with SQL, familiarity with collaborative planning and defect tracking through GitHub, and the ability to adapt workflows and drive efficiencies
- Ability to handle full time employees and contractors/contractor relationships
- Experience in mentoring and developing people is a plus
- Ability to navigate both strategic and tactical client needs while ensuring compliance with the law and industry best practices
- Ability to facilitate meetings, resolve conflict, build consensus, establish rapport and collaborate effectively, internally and externally, across all levels of an organization
- Analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to translate requirements and guidance into executable strategies, leverage data to influence decisions, identify risks and improvement opportunities, and distill complex issues into actionable plans
- Highly organized with the ability to independently adapt, prioritize and successfully handle multiple tasks or projects in response to changing, ambiguous or competing priorities
- Ability to apply discretion and sensitivity while working with confidential information

What the job involves
- Primary focus for this engineer will be creating reporting data lakes for the following: Asset Inventory, Active Directory, Google Meets, Jira, Confluence, Oomnitza and other tools within the IT Operations team
- Search and understand metadata about various data sources and metrics to quickly familiarize yourself with new data sets
- Create automation tools needed and take on a list of projects for efficiency improvements with the software tools the IT Operations team uses to help the IT Operations team scale with the company
- Create and participate in structured construction, automation, debugging, and implementation activities, ensuring architectural and operational requirements and best practices are met; follow industry and department standards for change and incident management while resolving frequently encountered technical issues and monitoring systems capacity; contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by maintaining automation code created by the team, regularly reviewing processes, tools and practices and identifying opportunities to drive efficiency and scale
- Provide input and assist with evaluation of new technologies and contribute to the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership of services
- Contribute to research and proof-of-concept initiatives for new technologies and assist with code review and design review, writes, organizes, and maintains code based on designs with guidance, delivers high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure deliverables
- Establish collaborative relationships with IT Operations team members, business partners, data analysts, and other engineers and support the development of automation templates that can be leveraged by compliance partners; drive self-sufficiency through ongoing coaching, training, and mentorship with partners
- Contribute to, and maintain a positive team culture by demonstrating behaviors consistent with Cruise values
- Managing contractors/contractor relationships and full-time employees
- Mentoring to junior engineers on industry coding standards and practices
Our take
The taxi industry has seen dramatic changes through mobile vehicle-hailing apps such as Uber, but these services focus simply on ease-of-access to regular taxi services. The automotive industry has seen a vast range of innovations in recent years such as electric cars and self-driving capability, features that are currently not found in existing services.
Cruise brings self-driving autonomy and electric cars together into a taxi-hailing mobile application. In addition to these innovations, the service focuses on efficiency through ride-sharing as opposed to each ride providing a single trip. Whilst other taxi-hailing services will inevitably turn to electric self-driving vehicles, Cruise shows potential to stand out through its AI-fuelled focus on carpooling and fleet efficiency.
Cruise, which has been acquired by General Motors, has received an inordinate amount of funding, including from Honda and Microsoft, with Softbank investing over $2B to scale its technology. A sum of this came after Cruise launched a limited driverless robotaxi service to the public in San Francisco. However, the company is now facing lawsuits from the city to limit its operations there after a series of accidents involving Cruise's vehicles.
