Role
Who you are
- We are looking for talented and, more importantly, passionate individuals who are motivated by the application of science and innovation to achieve net-zero materials
- Minimum 2.1 first degree in a Physical Science, Computer Science, or a related field
- PhD (or equivalent work experience) in Physical Science, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field
- Excellent working knowledge of scientific principles and appreciation of their application to materials challenges and materials discovery
- Knowledge and understanding of the mathematical foundations of machine-learning and data science
- Extensive practical experience in application of machine-learning and data science to materials problems (e.g., use of TensorFlow to train models of physical properties)
- Experience in computational modelling of materials, and prediction of material properties (e.g., use of density-functional theory or molecular dynamics)
- Proven track record of coding in Python for technical applications
- Experience using development collaboration tools for large multi-developer projects (e.g., git)
- Comfortable quickly adapting to new situations, learning new skills, and working independently as a self-starter
- Inquiring mind, aptitude for creative thinking and problem solving, and proactive, methodical, and organised approach
- Excellent communicator, able to effectively convey information to technical and non-technical colleagues in both written and verbal formats
- Proven track record of ability to work effectively in a team
- Appreciation of the needs, priorities, and challenges faced by a start-up company
- Right to live and work in the UK without sponsorship
Desirable
- Ability in JavaScript, Fortran, or C++
- Experience deploying models in a cloud environment
- Understanding of containerisation technology (e.g., Docker)
- Understanding of issues in material sustainability and commitment to addressing them
- Peer-reviewed publications on relevant topics
What the job involves
- We are looking for a talented full-time data informatician to spearhead our ML sub-team, expanding our platform’s capabilities in exciting new directions
- Drive the development of our materials informatics capabilities, applying data science and machine-learning to infer understanding from our datasets and predict novel materials
- Develop general-purpose analytical and predictive tools applicable across a wide range of material classes and applications
- Utilise our platform to design and orchestrate workflows of high-throughput material property calculations, growing our large dataset of material properties
- Collaborate with our science team to identify goals for platform development, opening new avenues for scientific investigation
- Take on more ownership and leadership responsibilities as we grow as a company and scale up our technology
Application process
- Three stage interview process:
- Initial 45 min video call "get to know" and a live coding pop-quiz led by our CTO, Robert Forrest
- 1.5 hour in-person interview, at our London offices, to go into detail around tech & science and a chance to meet the broader team
- A final 30 minute culture interview led by our CCO, Nic Stirk
- First round interviews will begin 02/01/24
- Successful candidates will need to complete:
- Belbin teams role profile (personality profile for which you’ll receive a full report)
- References from two separate employers
- DBS check

Our take
Achieving net-zero goals will be impossible without advances in material technology to drive electrification and lower the costs of renewable energy. Previously discovered advanced materials, such as titanium, have revolutionised the aviation, transport, medical and aviation industries, but the environmental, economic, and social costs involved in many equally powerful breakthroughs mean that many next-generation materials are not able to be utilised.
Material Nexus aims to accelerate the change to net-zero materials, providing an AI model that greatly reduces the need for physical testing to discover new materials. This allows businesses to develop advanced materials without the years of research typically involved in making a new material ecologically and economically viable for the market.
With seed funding secured, the company has begun scaling its R&D and marketing efforts. In the longer term, Material Nexus aims to build a facility where it can sustainably produce the materials it discovers and is eyeing an eventual expansion to the USA. Going forward, its focus on net-zero materials is certain to be welcomed by materials designers and manufacturers looking to play their part in the fight against climate change.
