Who you are
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- 6+ years litigation, restructuring, or similar experience, including prior inhouse experience
- Prior experience at an investment adviser or financial firm a plus
- If you are a commercially minded generalist who enjoys hard work and new challenges, this may be the job for you
- If you’ve ever answered a question with “I’m not that kind of attorney” – or “I’m just an attorney” – this would probably not be a good fit
What the job involves
- We're hiring a Portfolio Counsel to lead monitoring of our growing portfolio of litigation finance investments. You’ll be joining a growing team of engineers, lawyers, and data scientists to make real-time decisions in a fast-paced environment
- In this role, you will own our existing 200+ litigation finance investments, reporting directly to our Managing Director and weekly to our Chief Investment Officer. Our portfolio requires active management by someone able to combine commercial savvy with legal nous
- This is a front-office position for someone looking to apply legal skills to managing a large number of investment positions
- This person is comfortable (in addition to monitoring underlying commercial litigation) with analyzing contracts, negotiating with counterparties, and resolving disputes – all with an eye to optimally exiting our investment positions
- Serve as primary contact with our investment counterparties and monitor progress of underlying cases
- Report investment progress to internal stakeholders and evaluate problem investments for internal and external escalation
- Work with colleagues on our Finance and Investor Relations teams on quarterly reporting of investment positions
- Own the valuation process for our litigation finance investment, including serving on the company’s Valuation Committee

Legalist was founded in 2016 to level the playing field and allow small and medium-sized businesses to access justice usually available only to the largest companies. It does this with a team of lawyers, engineers, and data scientists to provide capital to lawyers and plaintiffs who need it most.
The company uses data from millions of court records in order to explore how technology and artificial intelligence can provide insights into the American justice system. Its Dossier program helps litigants and attorneys to orient their journeys.
Legalist invests in lawsuits with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, funded by some of the top venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, with a small team using data to drive litigation returns. The company has made 120 investments in more than 200 claims, according to the startup.
Businesses apply for funding via the website, and then Legalist's technology sources and vets meritorious legal cases for investment based on the likelihood of winning. This takes into account factors such as the judge, lawyers, court type, and other details. Due to a surge in demand for funding, the company expects to continue adding to the growth it has experienced since its founding.
