Who you are

7+ years of experience in Linux-based Infrastructure Engineering and/or Site Reliability Engineering roles
Experience with configuration management tools like Terraform
Experience with one or more public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Proficient in at least one programming language
Strong written and verbal English communication skills
The successful candidate is passionate about great user experience– both the developer experience of those building on top of the platform and that of the end users consuming services built on the platform
They have recent experience in building a modern platform for services/applications
They enjoy working with peers in product engineering, product design, and product management to find the best solution for users
They have an eye for security and performance concerns, and strong written and verbal communication skills

What the job involves

The Collaboration team is building products to help individual developers collaborate more effectively as part of teams
We measure this as more time writing code, less time waiting for operations, and less context switches
The candidate will be helping to build out a modern infrastructure platform that we can build SaaS-backed developer services on top of
The stack includes AWS and other cloud providers, Terraform, and Golang
Architect and implement infrastructure for a modern end-user-facing PaaS platform
Ensure observability and monitoring of the platform
Experience with GitOps CI/CD, CSP cost optimization, and hypervisors
Collaborate with peers in product engineering to make sure that we build the best possible experience for our users
Ensure that the platform that we build meets security and compliance requirements for user IP and workloads
Interface with the Core Infrastructure team at Docker to make sure that we stay aligned with their best practices
Participate in paid on-call rotations: 12 hour daytime shifts, 7 days a week, once every other month

Our take

Docker supplies a hub and desktop solution to simplify the workflow of app development teams. Originally known for popularising the idea of containerising software, it saw itself outpaced by Kubernetes. However, the company has identified a problem with the growing complexity of containerisation, with some apps consisting of dozens or even hundreds of containers - which is what it now addresses.

Docker has had a difficult time in the recent past, with 2019 seeing it sell off its enterprise business, reduce its workforce by hundreds, and change its leadership team. As a well known brand and ecosystem for containerisation, however, it aims to lure developers back to its product as well as to take advantage of the growing global demand for app development.

Returning to focus on developers rather than large companies was certainly a gamble, but one that seems to have paid off. The company has returned to profitability and raised Series C funding in 2022, which is cited to fund hiring new talent, ramping up its business, and continuing to develop and refine its product. It's also embarked on a series of acquisitions to bolster its business, with speculation mounting about its possible sale in the near future.
