Who you are
- 7+ years of overall professional experience
- Past experience at a high growth startup, or working at a direct to consumer marketplace
- Ability to operate as a team of 1 and get in the weeds to produce results in a highly ambiguous environment. You are scrappy and no job is too small
- Skills in gathering user feedback from buyers and sellers, extracting insights, and courage to advocate for product change
- A learning mindset around complex data and to create programs that inform go-to-market strategy, sales, and product development
- Excellent internal and external communication skills and especially experience in building/ managing partnerships externally
- Bias for action in a distributed work environment
What the job involves
- As the Strategy and Operations Manager for Ads at Whatnot, you will play a critical role in shaping and scaling our foundational Ads products.
- Reporting to the Director of Product for Ads, you will be a dedicated partner to the Ads team to drive strategy, execution, and optimization across all related initiatives, collaborating with cross-functional teams like Product, Engineering, Sales, and GTM
- Develop and implement strategies to drive growth and optimize performance for our sellers across ad products
- Lead cross-functional projects in partnership with product and engineering teams to scale ads solutions and improve seller and buyer experiences
- Identify inefficiencies and missed opportunities in ads and sales operations to maximize our ability to deliver value to new sellers
- Analyze ads data to provide actionable insights, guiding decisions that impact the overall experience
- Collaborate across the organization in conjunction with product, engineering, and design to help design, evaluate, and scale Ads products, representing seller needs and ensuring smooth execution
- Build and manage key relationships with internal and external partners, sellers, and stakeholders to ensure alignment on ads initiatives
- Advocate for Whatnot sellers and represent their voice in determining the engineering roadmap
- This is an individual contributor role that is multidisciplinary in nature; you will be expected to fully embody the Whatnot principle of “own everything and nothing.”
- As the Ads business grows and matures, there may be future opportunities to hire and lead a team of Ad Operations Specialists but this is unlikely to be in the next 18 months
Our take
The collectible toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectible toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars, and has also expanded to sports cards.
The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.
The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
