Who you are
- The ideal candidate is very adaptable and technically minded while having an uncompromising focus and vision for our customer’s needs
- Expert in Embedded C
- Firmware development experience in production environments
- Computer Engineering/Computer Science degree or equivalent with 5+ years of experience
- Proficiency designing RTOS-based and bare metal applications
- Expert in communication protocols such as UART, SPI, and I2C
- Excellent debugging skills and familiarity with common debugging tools such as JTAG
- Proven track record of shipping high-quality electronics and software in consumer products on a tight schedule
- Proficiency reading and interpreting schematics
Desirable
- Experience with AWS IoT Core and related services
- Experience shipping 1 or more IoT consumer products
- Experience working with wireless communication SoCs, especially for WiFi and BLE
- Experience with Altium or similar ECAD software
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Senior or Staff Firmware Engineer to join our team who is an enthusiastic developer, likes to solve meaningful problems, and can support overall software, backend, controls, & electronics strategy
- Lead design of various firmware modules
- Lead and participate cross-functionally with the business and product teams to define the requirements for our product roadmap
- Collaborate with the Electrical Engineering team to implement firmware to control low- and high-voltage electronics
- Collaborate with the Thermal Engineering team to implement embedded algorithms to enhance system performance
- Support manufacturing test improvements
- Mentor other developers on the team, and create guidelines for best practices to follow
Our take
The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry hasn’t really undergone much innovation in the last few decades. However with increasing awareness of climate change and growing regulations in this space, action is necessary to reduce the environmental damage caused by the increasing use of HVAC systems worldwide.
To solve this problem, Gradient has developed a hybrid air conditioner and room heater which reduces the carbon produced by as much as 95% wehn used to both heat and cool. It’s not the only company working on more environmentally friendly HVAC solutions, but what sets Gradient apart is that its window lodged device is much cheaper and easier to install as well as being quieter, and much less obtrusive than the average AC unit.
The company has attracted a large amount of investment, most recently closing a Series A round which was co-led by Sustainable Future Ventures and Ajax Strategies. It is using this funding to develop new products, add further IoT functionality to its devices and to increase its headcount. Gradient's environmentally friendly approach to heating and cooling puts it in a good position to capture a large share of the estimated $100 billion market for HVAC products.
