Who you are
- BS (with 9 years of experience), MS (with 8 years of experience) or PhD (with 6 years of experience) in developing machine learning models or systems
- Track record of driving multi-department projects from start to completion, including conception, problem definition, experimentation, iteration, and finally productization
- Experience in contributing to or leveraging one or more of the recent advances related to foundational models such as pre-training models, RL based fine-tuning , neural rendering, diffusion based synthetic. image/video generation, World Foundational Models
- Experience with processing large datasets, training ML models in distributed environment
- Track record of developing end to end pipelines for training Machine Learning Models
- Strong experience in Python and at least one of popular Deep Learning frameworks like Pytorch, Tensorflow, JAX
- Nice to have: 1-2 year of experience with people management
- Nice to have: Experience with containerization, FastAPI, REST /GraphQL, SQL
- Nice to have: Experience with autonomous driving and/or robotics
What the job involves
- The mission of the Foundational Models team is twofold. Firstly, it aims to leverage the recent advances in foundational models and generative AI to improve the safety and efficiency of the Autonomy Stack developed by Stack. Secondly, it works on co-designing a new HW/SW platform to run these models and workflows
- As a Staff Engineer, your role will be contributing to the design, development and maintenance of the offboard machine learning models and the pipelines and workflows to leverage these for improving the autonomy Stack and building a new HW/SW platform to efficiently train and deploy them
- Own the technical direction of the team in leveraging foundational models and related techniques for the dual mission of the team
- Design and implement offboard pipelines to train, distill, evaluate and serve Machine Learning Models
- Demonstrate that these pipelines work with open source data and contribute to open-source libraries
- Proactively identify opportunities for improvements and work with senior leadership team to prioritization of resolutions
- Align stakeholders with strong presentation and communication skills
- Lead challenging technical topics and build consensus
Our take
Driver shortages, decelerating efficiency and broad safety concerns have plagued the US trucking industry for some time now. High operating costs paired with increasingly scrutinized high emissions are leading to concern over the future of the logistics and goods transport market. Stack AV’s autonomous trucking solution aims to lighten the load of these issues, using AI to create smart supply chains and autonomous driving systems.
Its founding team have long been exploring the possibilities of autonomous transport through combined experience with Uber, and Google smart cars and shared founding roles at Argo AI, a similar company that disbanded in 2022 after it failed to become profitable for shareholders. Hopefully, however, the launch of Stack AV will balance the decades of experience as well as hard lessons learnt from the failed predecessor company and will find new ways to make autonomous driving tech a sustainable investment.
With a staggering $1 billion invested in Stack AV by SoftBank in 2023, the company is well-armoured for the time being. Its main competitor is Aurora, which underwent a successful IPO in 2021 but never achieved the high level of early funding that Stack AV did. It’s a promising start then for the Argo AI veterans' new venture.
