Who you are
- Bachelor's degree in computing or equivalent industry experience
- Strong SQL expertise, with the ability to write complex DML and DDL queries
- Experience in developing scalable data platforms, with a grounding in AWS. Familiarity with Spark and Redshift is a bonus
- Solid understanding of data engineering principles, including data modeling, ETL processes, and data warehousing
- Strong coding skills in Python. Experience with Django is highly desirable
- Motivated learner who can quickly grasp new concepts and technologies, adapting to our unique tech stack
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Comfortable asking questions, admitting when clarification is needed, and actively seeking help and guidance
- Strong team player who thrives in a collaborative and inclusive work environment, valuing open communication and constructive discussions
What the job involves
- As a Data Engineer at uMed, you will have a pivotal role in shaping, optimising and utilising our highly scalable data platforms. With strong fundamentals in SQL, AWS, and Python, you will contribute to the evolution of the data systems underpinning our healthcare platform
- Collaborate with key members of the R&D team to refine and develop our data platforms, ensuring optimal data access, security, and reliability
- Utilize your strong SQL expertise to write complex DML and DDL queries, extracting valuable insights from large datasets
- Contribute to the upkeep of data delivery architectures, fostering consistency across the platform
- Apply data engineering principles, including data modeling, ETL processes, and data warehousing, to effectively manage and transform data
- Leverage your strong coding skills in Python to build robust and efficient data pipelines
- Actively learn and adapt to our unique tech stack, bridging any knowledge gaps quickly and independently
- Foster open communication within the team, asking questions, seeking help when needed, and contributing to a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment
- Engage in productive discussions and debates with the team, actively contributing to innovative ideas and solutions
- Maintain a strong focus on quality, adhering to data engineering best practices and coding standards

uMed's founder, Dr Matt Wilson, witnessed firsthand the pressure of working on the frontline in the health system and how the lack of time and resource often led to research being de-prioritised. It's this lack of participation from healthcare providers that is a huge barrier for researchers trying to meet their patient enrolment timelines.
This is the problem Dr. Wilson set out to solve. uMed's platform is embedded across a network of healthcare providers, enabling it to automate the process of building prospective, protocolised patient registries. As a result, healthcare professionals can run patient research efficiently and at scale, as well as addressing other challenges associated with trial recruitment like high screen failure and dropout rate, speed of recruitment and achieving patient diversity.
uMed has seen great success in the space, now linking EHR records of over 10 million patients and working with an expanding network of healthcare providers from across the UK, USA and Australia. As one of a growing number of companies innovating in the healthcare space, uMed has successfully attracted fundraising which will be invested in developing its tools to run patient research more efficiently and ensuring regulatory compliance.
