Who you are
- Qualified lawyer with extensive post-qualification experience in-house and/or in private practice
- Solution-focussed and pragmatic and prepared to quickly develop in-depth understanding of legal issues which affect the charity and apply extensive legal knowledge and best practice and apply this in day-to-day work
- Able to convey complex legal issues in a clear and simple way
- Able to identify and pragmatically solve complex problems, use initiative to find commercial and pragmatic solutions and recognise when escalation to Head of Legal, Executive Board and/or Trustees required
- Delivery focused - manages and organizes own time effectively to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines to manage clients’ expectations and demands
- Proven ability to and builds external and internal networks for collaboration and knowledge sharing
- Excellent relationship skills and proven ability to build effective relationships and persuade and influence at all levels up to and including board level
- Proactively seeks to understand and support the commercial objectives of internal clients and wider strategic objectives of Cancer Research UK
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in all media
- Confidently identifies, articulates and evaluates key issues and risks, taking ownership of providing solutions and practical guidance to customers

What the job involves
- Due to expansion within our Legal team, we’re looking for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join us on a 12-month fixed term contract
- As a senior member of Cancer Research UK’s Legal Team, you’ll provide legal advice and solutions across all levels of the organisation
- You’ll also work proactively with the Head of Legal to help deliver the Legal Team strategy and improve processes and compliance across the charity
- With extensive post-qualification experience, you’ll be solutions-focussed and pragmatic with the ability to build effective relationships and influence at all levels
- Work independently and with minimal supervision to provide timely, proactive, pragmatic, high quality legal strategic solutions in relation to complex issues across all levels of the organisation, in particular, Fundraising and Marketing, Trading, HR (excluding employment law) and Corporate Resources
- Work proactively with the Head of Legal in helping deliver the Legal Team strategy and take an active role leading and contributing to delivery of discreet areas of Legal Team strategy and other cross-organisational projects as allocated by the Head of Legal
- Proactively identify, advise on and ensure good legal/contract management practice, in particular, work to embed the various policies and programmes designed to ensure contractual compliance and process efficiencies
- Develop and deliver training programme of activity
- Fostering a culture of collaboration and ensuring that other members of the Legal team are made aware of any issues and risks which may affect their client areas
- Proactively identify, monitor, address and report and make recommendations to Head of Legal on legal (and where appropriate other business) issues of significance and ensure that the Head of Legal is updated in a timely way, on these and other significant areas of risk and business developments
- Keep abreast of legal developments, in particular areas specifically allocated by Head of Legal, sharing relevant insights within the Legal Team
- Translate legislative and regulatory changes into practical business activities and ensure that appropriate and timely action is taken

Our take
The world’s largest independent cancer research charity, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) was founded from a merger between the Cancer Research Campaign and the Cancer Research Fund in 2002. CRC and ICRF had been long-standing pinnacles of the British medical institution, their work dating back to 1902 and 1923 respectively, and the merger signalled a strong step forward for UK medical institutes’ global influence.
A multi-armed charity, CRUK uses both grant-funded researchers and its own employed staff to research the treatments and causes of cancer, whilst its striking advertising and marketing campaigns are responsible for influencing public policy on the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. An example of a significant public campaign was Stoptober, which appeared to have triggered a third of a million smokers at the time to try quit tobacco throughout the month of October.
Alongside its pharmaceutical efforts, in 2023 CRUK funded clinical trials for the first-ever proton beam therapy for breast cancer, indicating a focus on technological innovations in the fight against cancer. On this subject, CRUK has also taken part in a billion-pound investment in the Francis Crick Institute, a biomedical research institute that is aiming to make England an international leader in the industry.
