Role
Who you are
- 6-9 years of design or art direction experience working within a creative team
- Design studio or ad agency experience is preferred, but not mandatory
- Must have a strong knowledge of web design, branding, typography, digital, print, and art direction as it pertains to photography, video, and motion graphics
- Organized and clean file management as you work within a brand library of components and collaborate cross-functionally with Product and Marketing
- Excellent skills with design software, primarily Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
- Strong presentation skills

- Varo is looking for a freelance senior designer or art director to help our creative team
- Contract Details: 30 weeks (July 2025 - February 2026)
- As a senior designer, you are a seasoned creative who loves to collaborate with art directors, copywriters, and other designers to bring a brand to life
- You’re on top of industry trends but can incorporate your own unique creativity and lens on the work
- You can develop compelling marketing creative that levels up our brand, help us grow customers — and keep them engaged

- Lead creative development from early concepting to final handoff, ensuring the work relates strongly to the briefs provided
- Partner with stakeholders to create compelling creative that clearly communicates Varo’s products and offering
- Collaborate with a team of art directors, writers, and designers to interpret our brand across various touch points including web, lifecycle and paid media
- Work closely with the Creative Director and Senior Art Director to develop and enhance the aesthetic of the brand and ensure all materials are designed and produced accordingly
- Create beautiful designs that build upon the library of assets we already have established, while looking for innovative ways to evolve how we use type, color, and photography
- Work with project management and stakeholders to gather feedback, and incorporate it quickly while meeting deadlines
- Partner with copywriters to develop creative that’s not only well-executed but strategically tells a story, too
- 40 hours/week
- 9am-5pm PST

Our take
The traditional banking system leaves many US citizens underserved, with some minority groups struggling to access accounts. Varo is one of many companies offering no-fee, high-interest accounts, as it takes on the traditional banks - with additional features such as a rewards program and access to early paychecks.
With many young customers distrustful of traditional banks, Varo has capitalised on this sentiment and grown to serve more than 7 million customers. It has a number of competitors such as Chime and Step, and it's also in competition with established traditional brick-and-mortar banks. However, as the first consumer fintech to be granted a national bank charter in the US, the company is at the front of the fintech revolution with a path to future success.
In response to economic uncertainty, the bank was forced to take cost-reduction measures throughout 2022. The effect has been positive, with a drastic reduction in its burn rate, which had been a primary concern. One point of interest is a shift in marketing strategy that has seen Varo focus more on growing the number of customers using it as their main bank, as opposed to growing overall user numbers. The company also has a new tech unit named "Varo Tech".
