Who you are
- You have a PhD in a technical discipline, such as Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Math, Biology, Psychology, Economics, among others
- You are finishing your PhD by May 2025 or are already a postdoc/early faculty at an academic or research institution
- You have strong statistical skills and have solid analytical thinking. You ask the right questions and strive to see beyond the numbers to understand what an analysis represents in terms of real-world applications
- Your research involved working directly with data and conducting analyses
- You are fluent in a data analysis language or tool, such as Python, R, Matlab, among others
- You are motivated to work in a fast-paced environment and have a positive impact on creators’ lives
- You have a growth mindset and aspire to continuously improve your soft and technical skills
- You are a great communicator with a love for clarity and simplicity
What the job involves
- You will learn the fundamentals of Data Science through a combination of training sessions, on-the-job learning, and mentorship
- You will become the expert in an area of our product and with a cross-functional team to build product features that help creators improve their membership monetization and community
- You’ll conduct quantitative research to inform product strategy and opportunities, design metrics to help track goals and make decisions, devise learning methods (including experiments) to test hypotheses, and work closely with our machine learning and data engineering teams on building user-facing data products
- You'll translate data into actionable insights and communicate your technical work to the data team, your cross-functional partners, executive leadership, and the rest of the company
Our take
Creatives face two major struggles in the online space: getting eyes (or ears) on their work, and getting paid for it. Patreon was founded to solve both problems with a platform that would provide a space for creators to host and promote their work, and offer supporters a way to show their support through a regular paid subscription.
Patreon has been a leader in the content subscription space since its founding, but recently has come under pressure from newer rivals such as Substack and Ko-fi. It has maintained its position by shifting its focus from being primarily a marketplace for supporters to find creatives that interest them to being a toolbox for content creators to promote their work. While the site's creatives value this approach it remains to be seen whether Patreon will be able to return to the growth it was enjoying in previous years.
Despite the inroads made by competitors and a troubling global economic outlook making finances tougher for content creators and their supporters, Patreon is still a leader in its space, with over 250,000 active creators having made $3.5B through the platform.
