Role
Who you are
- You have 5+ years of working experience as a Backend Engineer working with Java. Additional tools and technologies such as gRPC, GCP, BigQuery, and Bigtable are a plus
- You have experience working directly with stakeholders to understand, document, and develop APIs and systems to meet their requirements, driving increased adoption and reducing reliance on custom one-off implementations
- You have written distributed, high-volume services and know how to deploy and keep them running in production
- You have an interest in big data processing technologies
- You love working in an environment where you constantly experiment and iterate quickly
- You believe data is the most powerful tool for informed decision-making
- You have a deep understanding of system design, data structures, and algorithms
What the job involves
- We're looking to hire someone with backend engineering experience to help us deliver personalized recommendations across music, podcasts, and audiobooks on Spotify's Home tab. Home is the central tab in the Spotify app, surfacing the best Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks that Spotify has to offer
- You will closely collaborate with our internal customers to determine, build, and iterate over the backend systems design to meet their scalability needs. You will build the backend systems that power our application, scale highly distributed systems, and continuously improve our engineering practices
- We are currently exploring new areas of investment for 2024 which includes expanding our product catalog, so now is a great time to join us on our new journey
- Collaborate with key internal partners to determine how to scalably design backend systems and APIs
- Architect, develop and operate Java services deployed to millions of users
- Be a technical leader and valued contributor in an autonomous, cross-functional agile team
- Collaborate with other engineers, product owners, and designers to identify and solve challenging problems, creating awesome music sessions for users worldwide
- Be a leader of the Spotify-wide backend developer community affecting and driving our architecture across the company
- Work on what you want during regular hack days and annual hack weeks
Our take
Spotify was founded in an attempt to combat the rampant music piracy that was causing significant harm to the industry. The company has since taken music streaming mainstream and now has 180m+ paying subscribers across the world.
With features that include a highly accessible interface and a vast catalogue of artists, Spotify's strong brand has been able to maintain growth in spite of fierce competition from deep-pocketed rivals like Amazon and Apple. The company has achieved this by making smart acquisitions to move into other verticals to strengthen its offerings, especially podcasting, by acquiring Gimlet Media, Anchor and Parcast.
Spotify's future plans include rapid growth with a goal to become a one-stop destination for all digital sound, as well as AI and NFT integrations. However, high costs incurred from the acquisition of exclusive podcasts, increasing competitor strength, and weak bottom-line growth mean that the company must find a balance to maintain its position in the sector.
