Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of industry experience, including 2+ years in an engineering leadership role
- A strong technical background with hands-on experience in full-stack development and familiarity in our stack (TypeScript, React, Node.js, Postgres, Big Query)
- Experience building and scaling products for B2B or enterprise customers, preferably on a global scale
- Proven ability to manage and mentor high-performing engineering teams, providing clear direction and support
- Strong product intuition and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Bonus: Experience with AI/ML-powered product features
- Bonus: Experience developing custom integrations for enterprise clients
What the job involves
- As an Engineering Manager on our Speak for Business (S4B) team, you will lead the initiatives that build and scale our B2B product offerings for global organizations
- You’ll work closely with cross-functional stakeholders across Product, Design, Sales, and other engineering teams to deliver high-impact solutions for our business customers
- You will manage a team of engineers, guide the technical strategy for a variety of platforms—including our mobile app, L&D web portal, and custom integrations—and help shape a product used by millions of learners worldwide
- Lead the engineering strategy and execution for the S4B roadmap, delivering features and infrastructure that serve our business clients
- Oversee the development of Speak's B2B offering across all surfaces, including our core mobile app, the web-based L&D portal, and custom solutions for enterprise customers
- Guide and mentor a team of high-performing engineers, fostering their technical and career development
- Partner with Product and Design to understand the complex needs of global B2B customers and help the team navigate technical trade-offs and priorities
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams on developing and integrating AI-powered features, such as our assessment tools
- Direct the technical implementation of custom integrations with third-party systems, including HRIS/HR platforms, to ensure seamless customer onboarding and data management
- Collaborate with infrastructure and data teams to ensure our B2B platforms are robust, scalable, and secure
- We have dedicated offices in San Francisco, Ljubljana, Seoul, and Tokyo, and you’ll have the opportunity to talk to users in each of these regions on a regular basis as well as travel
Our take
As the international language of business, there are many incentives for global entrepreneurs to learn English. With over 1.5 billion people actively learning English to improve their job prospects, the customer base for Speak, an AI tutor in the English language, is potentially massive.
Investors believe so too, with tens of millions of dollars raised to fund the company from a range of international firms, including Korean investors and the Silicon Valley-based OpenAI Fund. This surge of capital will help Speak develop its software and open new markets, especially in the US.
Speak is attempting to break into a highly saturated education market, and the success of learning English fluently through its platform is yet to be proven. That being said, it has the potential to become a leading tool specifically in the mobile app sector if it can prove itself as efficient and accessible as the language learning platform Duolingo.
