What the job involves
- Bowery Farming is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics) for the Robotics, Hardware, and Automation (RHA) organization to lead a team and support our operations across our farm network
- This position will work closely with our advanced engineering, facilities, technology and launch teams to develop best-in-class solutions for our indoor vertical farms
- Lead a team in the overall design of end-to-end robotics, material handling equipment (MHE), automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV) and automation solutions for vertical farming
- Develop and manage a team dedicated to project engineering, robotics, vision systems, ASRS and MHE
- Coordinate with vendors and ensure the supply of equipment for farms
- Lead and manage the approval of manufacturing drawings, equipment inspection, and installation leading up to commissioning
- Work with our Controls Engineering and Design Engineering teams to ensure global success
- Work with multinational vendors and long term project life-cyclesCoordinate with partners in Operations to improve and sustain systems the team is responsible for
- Oversee Mechatronic design implementations at the farm level during construction and ramp, implement new solutions into existing farms, and retrofitting

The company's latest vertical farm in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is built on non-arable industrial land, and is powered with renewable energy to grow produce, which it can then sell to local retailers.
While it may seem hard to believe, the increasing global population coupled with limited farmland and environmental change, means that the world could be heading for a major food shortage in the decades to come. By turning to vertical farming, which is more easily managed, uses fewer chemicals and less water, companies like Bowery are able to meet demands in a more sustainable way.
Bowery has been expanding its network of farms rapidly since 2021, with its growth accelerated by the impressive funding that it has raised. It is an especially interesting time for the company as, while several competitors have filed for bankruptcy protection, it has itself announced that Amazon Fresh will be offering its products up and down the East Coast, and that it is expanding distribution of its salad kits to 150 Amazon-owned grocery stores.
