Role
Who you are
- 3+ years experience leading Reliability-oriented Engineers, with a proven track record of hiring, motivating, growing, and empowering teams
- A drive to truly understand the reliability-related needs of your customer (our developers!) and the ability to translate those needs into effective solutions
- Observability expertise with major platforms such as Datadog and Honeycomb, as well as a strong command of concepts like SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and the balance between shipping speed vs system reliability
- A solid foundation in infrastructure and software engineering, allowing you to push your team, ask hard questions, and recognize excellence
- Experience responding to production incidents, conducting root cause analysis, and proactively identifying issues via activities such as Game Days
- Familiarity with incident management tools such as PagerDuty, FireHydrant, and StatusPage, and the ability to configure and automate them effectively
- Experience building and maintaining real-time, large-scale production systems
- Strong communication skills, a spirit of collaboration, a positive and curious mindset
What the job involves
- LaunchDarkly is looking for a talented and inspirational engineering manager to help us build, scale, and empower a part of LaunchDarkly's engineering team
- You will lead engineers that monitor our core systems, developing new capabilities for our internal engineering teams, as well as responding to and mitigating incidents. After-hours On-call is compensated in addition
- Lead and enable a team developing tools and automation to streamline the deployment and operation of our infrastructure, and to detect and diagnose problems quickly and efficiently
- Enable our engineers to deliver their services with higher autonomy, reliability, performance, and speed through offerings written in Go and Terraform
- Ensure that new engineers get up and running in minutes, are quickly able to start contributing, and that their changes flow from laptop to production with minimal friction
- Set goals to ensure the health and continuous improvement of the system and its operational processes. You will help drive the overall reliability, scalability, and performance of our platform
- Ensure we run a cost-effective service, and monitor and make changes to hit spending constraints
- Help your team keep a healthy service while also prioritizing strategic, high-impact investments
- Help build a diverse and highly skilled team able to keep up with a rapidly growing product
Our take
Feature flags are a powerful software development tool, allowing teams to modify system behavior without changing code, therefore minimizing risk. If a business has a new feature they want to test, they can then roll it out to a small set of users before letting it go live. These companies can, for example, get quick feedback on the new feature and fix any bugs, or roll back any changes.
LaunchDarkly allows companies to run tests like this by activating the new code for only a small set of users prior to launch. Typically running these tests requires lots of developer time - a daunting and expensive prospect for most rapidly growing businesses - and can risk disruption to the user experience if testing takes place on the live product.
Demonstrating its value to businesses, the platform is used by the likes of IBM, Intuit and Atlassian. Recently it has seemed to focus on further scaling its growth as it develops towards being a leading business in the feature management space.
