Who you are
- Are very comfortable working with C++ in a large, shared codebase
- Have a very strong grasp of 3D mathematics applicable to maintaining and optimizing existing gameplay systems

What the job involves
- Cloud Imperium Games is looking for a skilled and talented Programmer to work on our exciting PC space combat sim, Star Citizen
- The Principal Programmer will work in a cooperative, cross-disciplinary team environment to ensure that our live service offering runs as efficiently and as smoothly as it possibly can, all within our own StarEngine
- Our engine, StarEngine, is a multi-million line multi-platform project
- Every programmer is recompiling the code base multiple times a day
- Design and implement well-engineered, reliable, maintainable, and bug-free code to support live service operations and updates
- Collaborate with team members to maintain and optimize gameplay systems
- Follow best practices, development processes, and coding standards
- Document and peer review technical designs with other software engineers to
- Work with QA to provide the information needed to fully test developed code and address live service issues promptly
- Provide ongoing support to internal customers for developed software
- Keep up to date on state-of-the-art software engineering methods, practices, and technologies
Our take
Cloud Imperium Games is an independent game company that specializes in immersive storytelling. It is currently developing a highly anticipated PC space simulation game, Star Citizen, initially funded by a crowdfunding campaign, as well as Squadron 42, a cinematic single-player sidekick to Star Citizen staring the likes of Mark Hamill and Gillian Anderson.
Originally announced in 2012 and 2014, neither title has received an official release date. The appeal for backers, who have contributed over $500 million to the crowdfunding campaign, is that the games exist outside the norms of modern game development, and that the company seems to have stuck to its initial plans and trajectory rather than adapting towards an earlier release.
The company announced plans to increase operations and headcount across the years from 2022 to 2027, which could suggest a release date at the end of this 5-year plan. The fans remain engaged for now, but the company runs the risk of frustrating and alienating their donators and target audience the longer they have to wait. And bad press surrounding management at the company is unlikely to help.
