Our take

As one of the leading video game companies in the US, Bungie’s former titles have included bestselling game franchises such as Halo and Destiny, marking it as a next-gen studio that is keeping its finger on the next-gen games console pulse.

Bungie scaled up in the early noughties thanks to an acquisition by Microsoft, leading to a period where Bungie made games for a variety of consoles. In 2022, Bungie was bought by Sony for $3.6 billion, though it claims that it will still work across different platforms despite its owner’s lean towards PlayStation. Indeed, Sony has claimed to be buying Bungie for its help in entering the live service games market. In return, Bungie will also benefit from Sony’s buyout by scaling up its team for new game and DLC releases.

The most recent buyout of Bungie may also help it expand out from the video games market into different forms of media, including most recently, mobile apps and games. The future looks bright then, for Sony and Bungie’s partnership. Bungie, however, must make a point of retaining its singular identity within the gaming marketplace under Sony.
