Newsela's mission is to provide meaningful classroom learning for every student.
While textbooks have been standard issue in classrooms for centuries, digital instructional materials are steadily becoming more prevalent. Newsela offers a learning platform that curates and rewrites news articles, historical speeches, and scientific papers to help accelerate learning.
The platform is available in both English and Spanish and includes quizzes, exercises, and writing prompts to help engage students at any level. More than 3.3 million teachers and 40 million K-12 students use the platform, which has proved extremely popular so far.
In 2021, Newsela reached unicorn status, joining EdTech competitors such as Quizlet and ApplyBoard. In 2022, research into the company's efficacy found that Newsela was 70% more effective at promoting reading skill maintenance and growth compared to an average summer reading program - demonstrating the value it brings to the space.
With its success so far, and a massive amount of funding at its back, Newsela is well placed to continue its expansion in the US market. Having recently focussed on updating and improving the platform, it now appears to be pursuing growth as it bolsters its leadership team and works to bring its operations to the "next level".
