Who you are
- 6+ years of professional software development and system design experience
- Several years experience in Java or an equivalent
- Passion for being responsible for your work from the beginning to the end of a project’s life cycle
- Experience driving large scale strategic initiatives
- Excellent software engineering knowledge and ability to provide technical mentorship and direction to others
- Data-oriented mindset: you want your work to be measured and impactful
- Customer empathy: you understand your customer’s requirements
- Software development skills and computer science fundamentals

What the job involves
- Risk Engineering works to protect Square and our customers from fraud and payment disputes
- We keep our customers safe while €20B+ flows through Square annually, and we allow the entire company to take risks and grow
- To do this, we build systems to detect and respond to potential threats, provide outstanding tools to agents for investigating events, and give our customers seamless web and mobile experiences to manage and fight disputes
- Our mission is to protect Square, protect our customers, and make a complicated and sometimes painful process understandable to all
- This is an exciting opportunity to join the new Risk Platform Foundations team
- In this role you will work with a team of full stack engineers focused on building the core platform and tools that sit at the heart of the Risk organization
- You will be responsible for maintaining and upgrading a number of key services that are essential to keep the Square ecosystem safe as well as helping develop the next generation Risk platform to ensure that our systems scale to meet Square’s growth
- In addition, you will be involved in the strategic roadmapping for the team as well as acting as a technical mentor for others on the team
- Build the core technical infrastructure to support the Risk needs across all of Square
- Work with partner teams across Square to develop new features and services
- Build systems that manage customer’s sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance
- Build tools that provide great experiences for our partners
- Design fault-tolerant systems so that the team can be brave, most fast, and break things, without ever showing a negative impact to our sellers
- Use your technical and soft skills to mentor others across Square
Our take
Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.
The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.
Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
