Who you are
- We’re looking for a social media aficionado who would love nothing more than talk about stories and their writers all day
- Coupled with a love of pop culture, entertainment, and reading and writing, you will help us ensure Wattpad is talked about and loved the world over
- A highly engaged Wattpadder! Passion for the platform, Wattpad stories, and their creators is a must
- Educational or working experience in marketing/communications
- Strong organizational or project management skills
- You can demonstrate an understanding of social media channels and have a point of view on which brands are doing amazing work in social
- You are comfortable with data and can glean learning and insights from numbers -- you can calculate clickthrough rates, conversion rates and engagement rates with ease
- An eagerness to take initiative and an ability to juggle multiple priorities with ease
- Ability to work from Toronto HQ occasionally (1-2 times/month) for content creation is preferred, but not required
What the job involves
- We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Marketing Intern to join our Social Media & Influencer Marketing team within the Marketing department
- Reporting to the Social Media Manager, you will play a key role supporting our evergreen content and campaigns across a global community of millions across our social media channels
- This is a great opportunity to collaborate with various marketing functions, while contributing to growing our online presence and channel engagement
- Assist in executing social media marketing initiatives across Meta, TikTok, X, and Pinterest using social, marketing and product tools (e.g. Sprinklr, Asana, AppsFlyer, Canva, and native social media platforms)
- Work closely with the Creative team and content creators to brief in creative concepts
- Help coordinate social media content and campaigns using project management tools, including working with stakeholders to ensure they input, review, and approve marketing tactics on time
- Use social listening to monitor and identify opportunities for community engagement to support channel growth and brand awareness
- Work closely with Brand Safety to ensure community concerns and issues raised on social media channels are escalated appropriately
- Stay up-to-day on social trends, tools, best practices and have a point of view on emerging new social channels in order to surface insights and learnings to help optimize content and engagement
Our take
Content is king and Wattpad has managed to create a platform that aggregates the most loved original writing content in the world, turning the traditional publishing industry on its head.
Where authors used to submit drafts to dozens of publishing houses in the hope of getting some eyeballs on their work, Wattpad opened up the process to millions of young authors by letting them easily submit their work, and fostering a community around their software that offers feedback and help.
The e-reading platform is now looking to double down on its strategy of taking its user-generated fiction and turning it into successful intellectual property upon which original series and movies can be based. However a significant challenge for Wattpad is in producing original, marketable content from its platform given the popularity of fanfiction, stories which are based on existing intellectual property.
Another challenge for Wattpad is the current economic conditions which have affected much of the tech sector and are not sparing digital publishing. Having shelved bold plans for the future it also laid off 15% of its workforce in March 2023. Having realigned for its current business needs however, it is now well placed to weather the current market downturn.
