Role
Who you are
- Pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Robotics or a related field (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc.), or equivalent industry experience
- Experience developing software for robotic systems on physical hardware
- Strong experience in dynamic system identification for complex robotic systems
- Proficiency in C++, Python, and ROS 2 development
- Solid understanding of machine learning techniques, including neural network models and reinforcement learning
- Experience developing robot teleoperation algorithms is considered an asset
- Knowledge of multibody rigid body dynamics and robot control is an asset
- Familiarity with Confluence, Jira, and project management tools is an asset
- Above all else, a consistently positive attitude and a willingness to do whatever it takes to create robust solutions to mission objectives
- Successful candidates will be a proponent of personal responsibility for themselves and their teammates

What the job involves
- Sanctuary, a world leader in building AI-based control systems for humanoid robots, is looking to hire a skilled and motivated Controls Engineering co-op to join our Controls team
- In this role, you will focus on developing and implementing cutting-edge control systems for our highly dexterous robotic hands
- This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the future of robotics while working with a multidisciplinary team of engineers
- Demonstrated familiarity with dynamic system identification techniques and their application to real-world systems
- Integrate software solutions with physical hardware in robotic systems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and test control systems
- Contribute to project documentation and management using tools like Confluence and Jira
- Ensure the robustness and reliability of control systems through iterative testing and optimization
Our take
Sanctuary has set itself the ambitious task of developing human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots. It intends for these to complement the human labor market - and eventually help humans settle in outer space.
Its robots are modelled on the size and shape of humans, and their cognitive architecture is based on the subsystems of the human brain. The hope is that this puts the so-far elusive artificial general intelligence (AGI) in closer reach.
It’s an ambitious mission, but the Sanctuary team have remarkable expertise and experience, which positions them well to take on the challenge. Some critics do suggest that its technology isn’t anything new, and that AGI (technologically glamorous though it may be) is no better than alternate, highly specialised systems. If it can be done, however, there’s no doubt it’ll prove a remarkable deep-tech breakthrough.
