Role
Who you are
- This role requires a strategic thinker with a hands-on approach, with a deep understanding of compensation, benefits, and equity strategies (preferably token strategies), ideally within the crypto or technology sectors
- 10+ years of experience in compensation, benefits, or People Operations, with a proven track record in leading compensation strategy for high-growth companies
- Deep expertise in compensation design, token incentives, compliance, and managing equity programs (RTUs, RSUs, etc.), ideally in the crypto or technology space. Prior experience transacting on-chain and managing crypto wallets is a strong plus
- Proven experience in leading cross-functional teams in fast-paced, global, remote-first environments, with a focus on compensation and benefits strategy
- Advanced proficiency in HR systems (preferably HiBob) and data analytics tools, with the ability to design and interpret key performance indicators (KPIs) that drive business decisions
- Strong financial acumen and experience managing compensation budgets, including payroll, benefits, and cost-benefit analysis
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities, with a proactive and data-driven approach to policy development and compensation optimization
- Strategic mindset with a demonstrated ability to independently identify gaps, implement solutions, and influence decision-making at the executive level
What the job involves
- We are looking for a seasoned Head of Compensation & Benefits to lead and shape our global compensation strategy, with a particular focus on the compensation model, including token incentives and global benefits offerings
- As a senior leader in this area, you will work closely with Finance, Legal, Operations, and external partners to drive compensation innovations for a dynamic crypto company and optimize our compensation and benefits offerings, ensuring alignment with the company’s growth objectives and culture
- Subject matter expert in compensation, token incentives, allocations, and compliance. Develop and implement a holistic compensation strategy/philosophy that aligns with our business goals, including equity and token programs. Partner with Finance, Legal, and external stakeholders to ensure compliance and optimize token distribution strategies
- Lead the development of advanced people analytics dashboards to track and assess key metrics such as headcount, retention, turnover, benefits usage, and overall compensation effectiveness. Drive the creation and execution of initiatives that enhance People Operations processes for efficiency and scalability
- Conduct compensation benchmarking using crypto-native and traditional data sources, ensuring alignment across base salary, bonus, token grants, and vesting structures relative to market standards in Web3 and tech
- Lead the evaluation and optimization of external HR service providers (e.g., Deel, Toku), assessing service quality, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with business needs in close collaboration with the Head of People Services
- Serve as a trusted advisor and sparring partner to the Board, senior leadership and other business functions, ensuring alignment across departments on compensation-related strategies. Foster strong relationships with key stakeholders to implement and communicate people initiatives effectively across the organization
- Collaborate closely with the Finance team to deliver comprehensive compensation and benefits cost analysis with a strong focus on OpEx optimisation. Provide strategic input on payroll, benefits structure, tax implications, and overall compensation strategy. Lead 401k and benefits cost-benefit analysis, as well as flexible time-off models, to ensure competitive and cost-effective solutions
- All positions are 100% remote (with optional travel to team and/or industry events)
Our take
While the Ethereum network offers users highly rated security, the trade off is that its network volume doesn’t have enough capacity to allow for fast and cheap transactions. Matter Labs is one of a small number of companies that are building scaling protocols through its zero-knowledge proof driven product, zkSync.
It’s not the only company of its kind, with the likes of Arbitrum and Optimism also receiving plenty of publicity and funding. However, Matter Labs zero-knowledge proof approach has been praised for both its transaction speed and security. If it was easy however, many more companies would be doing it, so it appears that Matter Labs has made a significant headstart on the competition.
Over the last couple of years, the startup has secured some major funding from high-profile investors such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), and Union Square Ventures. Matter Labs released its recently renamed ZkSync Era - a zero-knowledge, open-source security platform on Ethereum in 2023. Matter Labs is predicting zero-knowledge cryptography to outlive alternative "optimistic" security tech from the likes of Arbitrum.
