Who you are
- Undergraduate and law degree
- 7+ years’ combined experience in law firm and/or in-house legal department, preferably as an employment lawyer in a multinational, U.S. based company
- Proven expertise in U.S. employment law and litigation
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build close partnerships with business and legal stakeholders
- Ability to organize, prioritize and manage deadlines, workflow, and team execution in a fast-based and demanding work environment
- Ability to translate legal requirements into understandable risk-based recommendations for the business and legal functions
- Experience advising on sales compensation, including sales commission plans, is a plus
- Experience and/or interest in EMEA employment law is also a plus
What the job involves
- WeWork is seeking an employment attorney to join its employment law team as a Director within its Legal Department
- This position will sit in New York and will report to the Global Head of Litigation, Employment & Investigations
- Advise on employment matters throughout the United States and Canada, including hiring/recruitment, promotions, leaves and accommodations, performance and absenteeism management, disciplinary actions, reductions in force, terminations, and post-termination disputes
- Provide counsel to HR and business leaders on a wide range of issues, including restrictive covenants agreements, severance agreements, discrimination, harassment, leave, compliance, restructuring, franchising, M&A due diligence and integration, accommodations, pay equity, wage and hour, and worker classifications
- Oversee and partner with outside counsel on employment litigation
- Draft and review HR policies and handbooks, develop HR training programs, and train HR and business leaders on employment-related matters
- Draft compensation plans, including sales compensation plans and governance policies
- Oversee and occasionally conduct internal employment investigations involving alleged violations of law
- Monitor and draft submissions to regulatory agencies that involve employment-related reporting obligations, including EEO-1 and related wages reports, affirmative action reports/plans, and unemployment and workers’ compensation inquiries
Our take
WeWork is a commercial real estate company that pioneered the shared workspace market, providing spaces for anyone from freelancers to Fortune 500s. Traditional leases typically require businesses to commit to an office for 5-10 years, whilst WeWork allows its members to scale up from a single hot desk to a private office or custom-built suite, depending on their needs.
WeWork has hundreds of locations across the globe, with hundreds of thousands of members. While its initial rapid growth and dominance in key global hubs was impressive, it has since had to scale back and strategically re-align itself in an unstable economic climate.
There is certainly still potential for WeWork to see renewed growth and success, especially as remote and hybrid working continues to be popular. That said, observers will have to wait to see the eventual affect of its restructuring - and only time will tell what the company's future looks like.
